I recently purchase one of these great little devices for 'mobile work'
If you are serious about your hobbist upgrades then I would sriously consider one of these cracking quality units. It combines a 14bit scope/ great FFT analysis, a respectable spectrum analyser with 3D spectrographs plus it can double up as a basic impedance analyser (baby curve tracer) and vector network anaylser. It not a big bandwidth but it has some great software, easy to use and intreprit plus for just over a grand its a total steal.
My thoughts were a coupe of you could split the cost, this is a great one size fits all that is MORE than capable of delivering decent results at a very realistic price.
To put this into pespective, my second scope with these features (less VNA) was £14K, yes it better but my point is for this outlay you can quality your own work, debug and check components. I have zero affliation to the company, I felt you guys might wish to consider one.
There is a recent review below, by Shahriar, who unlike amir REALLY does know his stuff and then some.
