Not A+ everything, I don't have deep enough bass to do proper justice to everything.
happy with a solid 'B+ could do better'.
I don't have anything that I look at on the shelves and say 'Not putting that on, it sounds crap.' That'll do for me. It wasn't always that way.

I've been round that block a million times. Yes, Audionote. Gregorian chant - like the choir is in the room. Bit of rock music (doesn't have to be anything as extreme as Slipknot) and it's WTF? Those speakers. Oh my good god. Hahaha, yup.....spot on. Thing is, the best bits of gear I have heard can cross those genres and do a stunning job regardless. Better than a dedicated system for that genre? Not sure, that's a new angle to investigate. I think we may have uncovered a lot of why folk don't agree on HiFi very often.

Yes don't forget the speakers. You can do whatever you like with your front end and amplification but choose the wrong type of speakers and on some genres your F*&$@@.

Cranage Hall show coming up soon so a chance to hear some truly terrible loudspeakers if you're within striking distance of Cheshire.
Even fifty grands worth of other components can't save them.

Which speakers to choose though? How would one know what separates one speaker from the next?? This is where it really does pay to look at the measurements. The HECO really are very good, but that's what we expected as we had looked into the design and the measurements before Angus bit the bullet and bought some. It gave us all the information we needed to make an informed decision. Obviously, it doesn't tell you whether you'd like them, but they did rule out a lot of tat in pretty clothing. Had I listened to Angus and studied the measurements, but more importantly the design, I'd have dodged buying those god awful Naim Ovators......I was lucky not to lose big on those. The decision to buy the Q Acoustics came from studying the design and the measurements properly.

Bang on Oli, I took a bit of a punt with the Heco's but trusted you and Angus and most importantly what you heard. For me from a technical point of view it was the soft dome tweeter and Kraft paper cones plus their efficiency that suggested they could be good. They have exceeded expectations!

That tweeter is a key part of why they sound so good. Being larger than most, it doesn't break up distort anywhere near as much as the smaller ones. Very clever stuff as it changes the surface area used too. Iirc When you know someone's musical tastes so well, it's easy to recommend stuff you know they will like 👍
