It's a 50W McIntosh amp that just happens to have a headphone socket on. The casework, brand-cachet and import duty will account for much of the price methinks, but if people can afford one to go with the flash car and £2k a month mortgage, then so be it I suppose...
We've discussed headphones. I enjoy the direct coupled sonic approach and appreciate that beyond a certain modest price, you're paying for trimmings and extra-comfy earpads. when I listened toa collection of Grado headphones again last autumn, I topped out on the £320 ones, which i thought had the best balance for me. the thousand quid plus models were worse in many ways, as the dynamics had been refined out too much - for me anyway.

Musical Fidelity X Cans with a decent power supply, very hard to beat for very sane money.
Lots of Mods available from Rock Grotto,
Spending silly money like 2k no thanks; for little or no significant improvement in sound.
Have a friend who spends a fortune on kit, he is never happy, always griping about it, the system sounds nothing but average to me, yet he keeps throwing money at it. Told him he might as well get a crack whore for a girlfriend, it will save him money in the long run. He hardly listens to it anyway, just uses it to brag about. Spends a fortune on cables, trying to get it sound decent, we have nicked named him "The Cable Guy". Bloody daft!

I'll never spend 2k on a headphone amp. I feel diminishing returns quickly settling in.
Had a Sugden Masterclass HA-4 once. Nothing special. The Schiit Asgard 2 sounds better, IMO.
Max budget for me, would be £500.
