I've been thinking about trying some 300b's for AGES. I've seen these a few times and have very nearly pulled the trigger a few times.
I was thinking about getting them for a new project.
Any comments would be useful. What do you guys think?

I would imagine they are half decent, the trannies look a good size.

I can remember looking at this amp and thinking it looked good, but if you don't know how to bias valves, be sure to buy one with with an easy to do option, ie poking the multi-meter probes into holes on the top plate, easier than my amp whereby the base has to be taken off and then you have to know where the contact points are.

£582 at current exchange rates. I can order from a UK warehouse for £14 more. I'd probably get from the UK and hopefully be safe in the knowledge they won't get lost in transit from China.

Well after thinking life is too short I have taken the plunge and plonked a bid on a pair of these. I always fancied doing the SET thing with some 300b's.

Well it's a new project. I have a few FOO parts knocking around the workshop so it might be fun to see if these things make an improvement. Should be a giggle seeing these little things trying to power a pair of 15" monitor golds.

They'll drive them easily.
To about 20db

Disagree, Tannoys not an ideal load for SE. They'll work but I don't think it's an optimal match

I missed that bit at the bottom lol
back of envelope calculation you'll get about 83db for 1 watt sat 4 metres from the speakers. At 10 watts that will give about 10 dB of dynamic range i.e about half of what is the minimum requirement for music with a lot of dynamic range like full orchestra. For most other music will probably be fine.
But the Tannoy also have a minimum impedance of 5 ohms and that might give some FR variation from flat with the SE amps, bass might be weak or even MIA, top end might sound a bit dull. But you never really know until you try it.

I missed that too Macca, but I would entirely agree, 15 inch drivers can sometimes perform better with more watts.

SE needs speakers with high impedance with a flat trace and high sensitivity to work optimally. Although I wouldn't personally have them for firewood that's what Audionote speakers offer. Or even better and much cheaper a set of the old 'Kabuki' speakers from Sansui, Pioneer, Sony etc

Guys, don't get too hung up about me using these with Tannoys, I've six or seven other pairs of speakers to try. Interesting comments regarding on what's needed. I've only bought these as a bit of fun. I couldn't really give a Sh#t if things don't work out. They are purely for my amusement.

There is a Klipsch dealer not too far from you in Hull, Fanthorpes, and if you have time, see if you can't get a dem, no ones forcing you to buy them. In the meantime I hope the Tannoys give a good account of themselves and you enjoy them. I have been hinting to my brother to try a pair of Tannoys or Klipsch, maybe when I get back to the uk I can twist his arm a little more and we can go for a demo.

Never tried Klipech, never say never I suppose. This whole jaunt is to explore the 300b circuit and valve.

SOME HELP NEEDED! Right guys these things are now sitting on my listening room floor, BUT, not valve fitting instructions. The 300b is easy enough, the valve complement includes Soviet Union 6H8C ×2, Soviet Union 5U4C ×2. Three bases exist on top of the amplifier. My problem is knowing where the 6h8c lives, is it the front valve base or the rear?? I can't find any instructions on the net. I suppose you could have told me so for buying ChiFi .

I do have a photo with 6SN7 which appear to be the front valve. I've emailed Douk on Ebay, maybe might get an answer. The supplied valves are the same size.
