dreamed of owning one of these since there introduction in 1986 i think..would drool over the high end mags and say to myself one day i will own one of these..just for the looks and engineering .. well i finally got myself one febuary 2005..sourced a mint gold plated one from a dealer in watford. went to his house and made a deal with him..i paid around 1k for it. then went off to michell engineering to get an arm board..40 quid lol..amazing. if that was linn it would be about 800 quid ok got it home.spent hours setting it up. lowered the needle. guess what
sounded nigh on the same as the rega 300 it replaced..maybe slightly more control..for about 3k new i expected way more.. but i fulfilled a dream by getting one..and now i have it will never sell it..something like this will never be worth less that i paid for it..
one day i may send it to that origami jock fella and get some good wire fitted to it..the stock one is shyte i know that

SME used to fit a VDH cable as standard, certainly on older ones. I have to ask, what makes anyone think the internal cables are shite? Same for the RB300, as in this latter case, the fine Hitachi wires are chosen for minimal internal drag or binding. Some bodgers just haul the old stuff out and fit thicker cardas wires instead with no regard for internal earthing or how the cables are dressed from pipe to pillar. Just sayin' like... I think SME *did* change the internal wires in later ones so a call to them if necessary might be a good idea. The gold SME is a collectors item and will appreciate in value as the years go on I think, like the gold-trimmed Technics deck. The dealer still in me suggests you upgrade to an Orbe, as the sonics really do improve with this one, but hey, a wonderful thing to look at

I went from Gyro RB300 to Orbe SME 309. Current 309s have the silver/copper hybrid internal cable same as other models in the range. Apart from the adjustability / damping trough (and headshell) I think the only real difference with current V is the external cable supplied from copper to silver/copper. I think it's the external cable that a lot of people feel the need to upgrade to something very expensive (The SME supplied ones are £200 and over). The Orbe / SME is certainly a substantial leap from the Gyro / Rega. I believe you can still buy a gold version so it's not that big a rarity (but now very pricey).

Rudi, you should just cash in and flog it. Buy a different arm if it’s not your thing, it will be worth serious money given it’s finish
