It's been a while since I posted anything decent on here. It's an old resto I did in 2019 but it might give a little light relief to some forum members.
This is the beast. It had been stored in a barn for 25 years, HONESTLY! The paint work needs a little attention.
Platter mat needs a bit of elbow grease.
Under the hood....
More platter mat woes...
Controls look a bit faded..
More to follow at some point.

Update pt II
The platter mat needed some cleaning.
Aluminium disc needed some work.
And then the finished product.
A complete overhaul of the bearing.
We start by removing the screw, nuts, and washers. All to be ultrasonically cleaned and polished.
Bearing dismantled. New gasket needed, spindle needs ultrasonically cleaning and polishing. Thrust plate is good order, ready for another 50 years.
Bearing housing to be cleaned and polished.
Just starting to lightly polish the spindle.
Felt ring knackered. Need to make a new one.
More later......

A few more pictures of the 401 restoration in no particular order. The speed selector needed a complete stripping, the speed selector legend needed re-doing, a new respray was needed and the actuall speed selectors themselves needed completely rebuilding. More on another night.

Amazing that these things were so well built they can sit in a barn for thirty years and get in a right old state but still (with obviously a lot of work) still clean up to like new again.
Reminds me of a documentary I watched where they go to a Victorian-era pumping station, everything in it, the machinery, the controls, even the building itself still in perfect working order after 120 years because it was all engineered to effectively last for eternity.

Funnily enough I just watched a documentary about a railway line in Wales that had been neglected for 40-50 years. I really got engrossed by the passion of the blokes who wanted to restore the thing. Rather sadly, I do get quite emotionally attached to these decks and feel I have a duty to keep them going. Yep I admit to being a complete saddo!

Thanks, that means a lot. I wish I had about 1% of your technical knowledge.

It's been a little while, it's time for an update.
So, the 401 has had quite a bit of work bestowed up it. That paintwork needs fixing!
A bit of elbow grease to fully remove all the years of decay.
And then a complete respray. I primed this first, many coats of paint and then several coats of laquer. What you see next is a mock-up of what the 401 is going to look like.
If you look very carefully you will see neither the motor or bearing are installed. As ever gents, more another night.
