Mine was probably Mission 775LC with 774LC arm, AT95e, Rotel RA 840bx2 and Monitor Audio 252s. This was the first point at which I felt like it was becoming something more than just audio. I had an Akai and JVC separates system I bought about age 13 but it wasn’t really good enough for me to count it.
The Mission turntable quickly gave way to a Linn Axis which was worse in every way, particularly the arm. A Townshend Rock came and kicked the Linn into touch.
The Rotel amp blew up within weeks and after a few Japanese amps failed to match it, was replaced by a Cyrus One.
Speakers were mistakenly replaced with Heybrook HB1s. They lasted a week before trading up to ES14s.
That meant the Cyrus had to go and was ousted my a Myst tma3. There it stayed for about 3 years until I tried moving to Cd and wrecked the balance of the system.

The first proper stable stereo I had was in 1975 - GL75/M75-EJ, Lustraphone LP100 amp and Audiomaster Image One speakers (designed by Robin Marshall when in complex-crossover mode).
The Lustraphone amp was very special but slightly before its time as the output stage would pop itself on switch-on. They designed a complex Class A-style power supply for it which cost loads and drained them of money and they closed up in 76 or so. very shortly after, higher voltage output transistors became available which would have cured the problem at source! I tried before that with an Armstrong 621 but the bloody thing motor-boated from new - good looking but a badgers-arse design which only got semi-sorted right at the very end of its life when it was being sold off in Comet and similar places.

Pioneer PL112 Pioneer amp Celestion Ditton 33's
Don't think things really went downhill after that. As far as I remember moved on to this.
Dual 705 A&R A60 Mission speakers.

Dual 505 A&R A60 Heybrook HB1
Things seemed a whole lot simpler back in the 70s.

That’s how I feel with things like Spotify and streaming. Others seem to love it and discover/play more music as a result. Why the difference? A tough one but a good start point might be to look at what we each get out of music and what mental associations we attach to listening. People like me want own and cherish our kit and the albums are probably similar. To others the kit is more a means to and end and maybe the music is the same. Owning it and handling wit means nothing. They just want to hear it. Then there’s the human trait Rudi refers to above. The effect availability has on desire. For some, it just kills it, because they have become accustomed to seeking what they cannot have. It’s likely an evolutionary trait that has fidlldf human growth. For others it’s an opportunity to explore more variety. Probably a different evolutionary trait. All very deep for an early morning so I’ll shut up

Well put. I think I’m wired like you in that respect. I remember that same desire fuelling my kit obsession too. All those things I couldn’t afford. I’d see that famous ad of 6 systems. The biggest being an LP12 and Isobariks driven by a Naim 6 pack. I couldn’t afford system 1, never mind that one, Then I moved yards away from the Sound Org and I was stood beside all of it. My desire just rocketed.
Now I can have anything from that era. Even a 6 pack if I wanted. I’ve had all the separate components anyway. When it’s all there on a plate, it’s just not the sa,e level of desire.

Owning it and handling wit means nothing. They just want to hear it. There seems to be some unwritten rule amongst audiophiles about having to say how you are only into music and not the equipment. For me that's the difference between an audiophile and an enthusiast - audiophile sees kit as a means to an end, the enthusiast is also interested in the kit for its own sake. Doesn't mean he likes music any less. My first system was Fisher speakers and amp and a Tenasi belt drive turntable, added a JVC tape deck after 6 months or so. Then I got some big speakers that the amp couldn't drive, so I changed the amp....and I was off and running as a box-swapper.

I also like the ability to create and share playlists. It's the streaming equivalent of the 'random' C90 tapes that I used to enjoy making and subjecting friends to...

It’s never questioned when someone loves cars, even when they rarely drive them. Yet if you don’t profess your love for music whilst playing down any interest in the kit, you’re somehow shallow and not in it for the “right” reasons. It’s why I’m posting here rather than anywhere else. I didn’t seem to fit.

That was what attracted me to this forum, we can waffle on about the kit and no-one pops up to tell us we are missing the point

15 years old. I had a brand new Sony PS-212 turntable, semi automatic, direct drive, strobe. I was completely happy with it until I read the reviews - says it all.
My dad had upgraded his amp and gave me his old Sony TA-1055 integrated amp. Sliders per channel for volume and tone , buttons for loudness, tape to tape etc. I was happy with that until I swapped my dad's amp out and put mine in his setup - it fell flat and was rough as hell. It was quite full-featured though - look at those input options! A proud SOLID STATE on the front - the latest technology.
The speakers were old DIY jobbies from somewhere. Looked like Harbeths but were not. They sounded different to eachother so I opened them up and found they had two different woofers - one of which was elliptical.

They look really nice. Build looks above the norm for that time. So much kit from that era is well built. It puts lots of plasticky stuff of today in the shade.

Nothing like that feeling of getting anew album home. I remember a few of them even today. I can even remember the trip to get them in some cases. I’d forgotten until Rudi post.
