Ate you damping the perspex from underneath, it's a big old sheet, it might hum a little with 5hose big coils.

so ever onwards, using the pva/iron method for this job, 2 coats of pva applied to the ground and veneer, leave until tacked off and press on with the iron on the cotton setting. front edge's done. whilst waiting for the top surface to go off i recessed my back panels for the speakon connectors. Speakons? Why!?

Because they are poo! Have you ever used them? The connection between plug and socket is usually rattling around. After going to so much effort and expense, I'm really surprised you've gone down that route. Also, they don't do Copper Speakon connects....they are all brass. You do great work Jamie. Speakons aside, I love the Crossover layout and the wood work is always exemplary.

ah ok,well if they prove to be as bad as you say then i'll change them out. You may not care/have the same experience/ opinion and that's cool, but I hated them. They were on the back of my 686 and I couldn't stand them. The gaffer has genuine Neutrik trypes like yours on some speakers she used for work and they rattled too. Also, there are some limitations to cable diameters too IIRC.

They are standard on pro speakers these days. I think because they lock in place and they will take high current. I don't think you will lose any sound quality with them. Ollie I am sure will disagree.

They have a far higher contact pressure than you can achieve with 5 way posts and they're available silver plated. And if the conductivity of brass worries you then you'll Sh#t the bed when you find out how much lower the conductivity of solder is...

I'm not one for repeats so ..... you guys do you!

yes lots lol so where did i get too? oh yeah, so i made a frames up to sit the acrylic boards in,these will be sprayed black to match the cabinets.
all drivers have been wired up with fisual s-flex cable,a change from my normal van damme hifi cable.
the frames have had the speakon connector holes drilled for mounting and i made a start on the point to point wiring, the crossover layout was done with asthetics in mind rather than the easiest route for wiring. this turned into a bit of a headache, lucky for me mark (ynwan) offered to help and draw up the layout for me.
both done!
speakon connectors wired up,the end is in sight!
rear panels sprayed and fitted.
bingo! all done! the tv stand makes a perfect place to put them.
so where to start? well my initial impression are wow! they have turned out better than id hoped for. the bass is blatantly improved,it's stronger and poweful with impact, i thought it was good before but now tracks from yello's toy album have me enjoying the cd all over again.
another aspect that has improved is the seperation, good before but again a big improvement, you can easily now choose what you want to listen to in the mix, follow it and change to another instrument without detriment to the over all sonic image. another thing to be lifted is any echo or reverb in the recording, particularly on a singers voice hangs around a lot longer and has a sense of air to it. moving on to detail,i was listening to sade's smooth operator yesterday and the bass guitar is a pleasure to hear, again easy to switch off and just follow it as are the now the tom toms.
one of my favourite tracks is the ballad of the runaway horse by Jennifer Warnes, a great track for speaker set up, the upright bass is used and again this is just marvelous now,the decay on the plucked strings is longer and resonates naturally.
i could go on and on as its like having new speakers in the system, really it is!today im playing all my go to tracks to hear the differences so all in all the hard work has been well worth the effort as im a very happy chappy! thanks to you all for the comments, encouragement and advice, especially mark. cheers fellas!

That must be a relief? lol yes but its tried and tested so i was confident, all componants are the same spec as the original crossover value just better quality. it didn't stop me crapping myself when i first turned them on and no sound came out the right speaker,i had the umbilicals round the wrong way
