so i finally decided to get on with going external with the crossovers and upgrading the components. here's the inductors.
and for comparison the old crossover and the new components .i was shocked at the size of the blue jantzen caps! im hoping to get the layout done at the weekend and then i can start on the boxes for them.

Im liking the choice of components.
Can i ask what sort of price you have paid for these bits? Obviously considering mine will now be staying for the duration, i have to plan for these things lol

a pair of rear panels made today in 25mm beech faced ply,i will add the recesses for the binding posts later. i may junk them in favour of delrin but if thats the case they wont be 25mm thick.

currently around £450 for the pair so far. wow! I have been doing a little reading on the subject of XO's for the yams, and i noticed Troels Gravesen has tewaked the values on the crossover to flatten off the response. However, i cant find the values he is using. Are you sticking worth the factory spec?

Don't know if it's any help but Floyd Toole says this:
''The NS1000 was an exceptional loudspeaker at the time, and not embarrassing even now. The only problem was that they were designed for a flat sound power target, so they were slightly bass shy - turn up the bass and/or turn down the treble for better balance.''

My only gripe is that last modicum of resolution. I am going to get (with help) the best set of values I can find and hope to pull that resolution out of these superb speakers with a change of wiring, new inductors and caps. If I am successful, they will be refinished in proper Matt black and here for the long term They have done enough to win me over.

The Yanks tend to have big houses (except in some of the East Coast cities) and made of wood so large rooms and lossy in the bass.

It's worth measuring the original crossover capacitors before you spend on new ones. I have read that an old pair had caps that were still in tolerance. I am assuming you would do this anyway.

Nope, gonna change them all for modern day parts which are substantially better in quality Vs the vintage stuff.

Yes! I was reading your thread over on AF and found that little nugget. Thanks for the heads up. I have already contacted Falcon for info on their Inductors. See what they say. I presume the 5mH will have a Ferrite core due to size and power but the others are air core. I could do with finding some pics of the originals as I would like to see what was in there originally.

yes and also the 2.3mh as well. Ah ok. Your's were Jantzen weren't they? I found a guy on eBay who makes them too. Falcon get to 2% tolerance and I'm still waiting to hear of the eBay guy.

i spent yesterday bending and straightening capacitor legs,i also made a stainless steel drilling jig to drill the holes for the components in the acrylic base boards. drilling jig in progress. today i drilled the base boards, here's a mock up,to say im pleased is an understatement! next job is to wire them up then onto the frames.

Reminds me of Sushi. This is all moving along faster than I thought it would. lol yes it does! i've had some of the parts a while martin like the big rfc bass inductor,i just decided to get on with it recently while the paradise is being upgraded. oli,it will be the same size as the speaker footprint.

with the exception of the rfc inductors i have now epoxied all the components in place. my new saw blade has arrived today so i can now get on with the frame for the x-overs. looking good even if i say so myself sooner or later im going to have to face the wiring lol, although my initial concerns have reduced somewhat as i had a eureka moment and realised it would be a lot easier as there wont be any componants in the way underneath,i'd been drawing up the wiring diagram with them included!DOH!
