So a quick question - I have a fee of €18 for my Power 686 PCBs. Should I pay this or not? The import tax is €28, which I understand I am obliged to pay, but as usual, I have no contract/agreement with Fedex for them to pay this on my behalf. I am more than capable of paying it directly to Fedex myself.

Ok, so I have decided to pay the fee. How can I avoid this in future, and is it worth it?
The next order is going to be about €1k, so looking at €200 import duty. If the FedEx fee is a 2% (with a minimum of €18) is it worth the hassle?

Seriously it's £12 not £200 , my charges run into £1000's a month £12 would be nice now and again doesn't matter what shipping agent is used always a admin fee

It was €18 with import tax of €28. The handling fee was almost as much as the import tax. Which added about 45% to the total cost.
I have no issue with €18 on a set of €1k amp parts.

Your contract is with the shipper, if that states you are liable for the charges then you are liable. If not then shipper is liable.
FedEx pay the tax on behalf of the shipper, not the consignee.

Is there any way to pay the charges upfront? This would be useful for small purchases.
Large ones, I am happy that the shipping company deals with the pain.

Not that I know of. The courier is also the customs clearance broker, without that you have to do the clearance yourself and there's still a charge. Plus your delivery gets delayed while you sort it out.

And you have to pay storage fees on top?

Google refusing FedEx fees, there's a simple process to reject them if they weren't stated upfront. You ate liable for tax duty but not none explicit fees tacked on later.
But you have to follow the process, letter to send etc

But then the fees get transfered to the person shipping the goods? Fine if it is a large company, but I won't do that to a one man band.
