Im not a digital person as a rule, but i do play the odd cd, and have a squeezebox upstairs for when im working on my bedroom office computer. But when i saw an arcam delta 170.3 cd transport pop up on the worlds largest car boot sale, i had to have it. I had one back in the 90s, it lasted until about 2005 ish when it failed, not through its own fault, it ended up with liquid in it that it shouldnt have. I ran my original one with a black box 3, a dpa dac (little bit? Cant remember), an x24k dac and a very early beresford. A lovely lovely transport with a sound that i never bettered with any cd player since. Of course cds are ancient old crap now, but they are as digital as ill ever get. Im an analogue man and always will be. Need a dac now though, ive still got an ancient beresford tc7510 and a diy ak4493 thing somewhere that i was playing with some years back. I dont think they will cut it. Im not prepared to be paying out alot of money, i reserve that right for vinyl. Topping dacs have been suggested, as has an older arcam rdac which has a certain appeal, as the first dac i ran with the original 170 was the matching black box 3. Suggestions?

My favourite DAC is The PecanPi. Unbeatable VFM, IMO. You'd need a RPI to get it running and then a source, which could be a NAS or files on a Micro SDcard. If you want to use the CD I don't know if orchardaudio has a solution, but if he has one, it would be the way to go IMO Seriously good sound from it. I can't speak highly enough. For a stand alone DAC, If i were to spend my own money on something, it would be on one of these: www.denafrips.com/ares

Nope to the pecanpi, no faffing with computers for me. it'll just be for use with the delta. Maybe hang it off the back of the second squeezebox i have if i can be arsed to find it I simply havent the inclination or patience for any of that. Which is odd as im perfectly content to faff with a deck, arm and cart until the early hours....
Couldnt see a price for the dac in the link

Works well.. but I switched to MOode and couldn’t be arsed to see if the plug in could be used with that.

Well i bought a topping e30 last night, plug and play and simple. i got fed up of looking at reviews and decided that as i just wanted something simple, the topping was simple enough, and modern enough to last me until either it or the transport packs in Seems popular enough that if i dont like it its pretty easily re sellable

There are 4 software option from the me: 1. Volumio 2. Ropieee - Roon Endpoint 3. PiCorePlayer - LMS device (squeezebox) 4. moOde Audio All of them come fully configured and ready to go.

Well i bought a topping e30 last night If it turns out you don't like the E30, get a Rega DAC. I've ditched my modern techno-wonder-DACs (Topping D70 and SMSL M200, others previously) and I use a mk1 Rega, it sounds miles better imho.

Im very happy with the combination Theres something to be said for a dedicated cd transport ...me just having bought an Arcam DVD as CD player/transport! Albeit one that Jimmy Hughes used to rate as a player! I use a modded MHDT 'Havana' as dac. ***
Though my ancient Panasonic SA-HR70 reveiver is all digital, I think with a Texas one bit dac inside. Was rated, sound-wise in the 90s when I bought it. Still going strong.
*** Modded with better ingredients. It's a 16 bit (Redbook) Non filter dacwith a nice valve buffer.(With a nice valve-both meanings!)
