I've been harbouring an urge to buy a R2R for ages. I think I've done with my TT tinkering and fancy another analogue challenge. I'm not into CD or streaming. So, does anyone have one and what are your thoughts with regards buying a deck, what would you go for?

I always fancied one of the Technics ones in black: But I'd never use it and they aren't cheap. Plus you have to get them calibrated. Then find something to play on them. Ali T had one but can't recall the make. He'd taped some stuff off of Sky Arts and played it back for us. It's a good sound if everything is set up properly on the deck. They're really for people for who've found that vinyl isn't expensive and inconvenient enough for them and want to go one further It is the coolest of all the formats though.

Something simple maybe Revox A77 ?? I honestly don't know.

I'd love one but cost and room prohibit it. They just remind me of Joe 90.

We sold that one and used it to play our master tapes on. It looks and behaves beautifully, but under the dressing, it's no better than a Revox high speed 2 track B77 really which looks boring - and that was easily beaten in live recording by a portable Sony DAT recorder. My B77mk2 HS sat there looking fab for a couple of years, but that's all it did - sat there looking fab and to show off the tapes when pals came round.

I have a Tandberg TD20a which is a superb machine, and also a Pioneer RT909 which looks a million dollars but isn't the sonic equal of the Tandberg.
