A Krell couldn't drive them properly? That's got to be a first!
Never heard any of them. Yank brand I think. No limit to the hi-fi craziness that side of the pond.

They're rubbish 😉
"............ Runs off to stick a cheeky bid on them" only kidding, look cool, I bet they're excellent with the right amp.
One of Colins (Wonfor) M100s would drive them pretty good I think.

We went for a dem of them many years ago at the Sounds of Music, the owner of the shop was the designer, and he also designed the Lumley Statospere tt. Can't remember his name, but they are fine sounding speakers.

I think they are UK in all honesty, but can't find too much on them. Jerry stuck a bit on AoS about them but other than that, it's a secret, very well kept

The 686 certainly would get them going after the PSU change, so I'm not concerned about that. They do look interesting

I'm sure I've read about these speakers somewhere but can't think where. I'm wondering if it was in a US magazine that I read the pdf of on issuu.
If I get time tonight I'll do some research for you.

They just look like American speakers.

So.... good, as long as you don't sit too closely and position them correctly.

RFCs post suggests that you'd be good around 2-3m away, with toe in to remove phase shifts, which only become audible if sitting off axis. Also says they are very good speakers. I think they are probably pretty useful beasts

Yes, UK - John Jeffries, Sound of Music. His Lumley valve amps were pretty good. I had his M120 monoblocks as my 2nd ever valve amps - very solid, good sound. JJ was/is "a bit of a lad". Well dodgy at times! His speaker designs pretty much changed by the week with different drivers going in. He was into mid and/or treble ribbon drivers for a while but I think eventually settled on cones&domes as sounding best. I've heard a few Lumley speakers, some were very coloured others pretty good. Don't think I've heard the biggies like in the OP.

Did you hear the 300's?

I can't recall model numbers, it was decades ago. There was a big range, going from quite small to very large. But I'm sure I heard something very similar to the 300, -- err, best avoided. What I heard was quite congested and coloured. They tended to get better as they got bigger iirc. But the sound changed a lot as he tinkered with the designs. Some were lemons, others weren't.

actually, looking again at that ebay listing they're bigger [and probably better] than I thought - I'd take the seller up on the offer of a dem before parting with 1k, though.

We listened to the 200 and 300's, and I think he also did 400's as well as the Lampro's shown in the op. He was also a distributor for quite a few brands, and sold some pretty expensive gear for the time.

Reading those reviews and comments I found for Oli yesterday gave me the same impression, they look impressive but I think they'd be average at best and a difficult resale if you wanted rid of them. I would avoid too

Absolutely, and I don't need them. The MS880s kick add so it was just a fleeting moment of wonderment. They would be a great conversation piece though.
