i've been making up tonearm cables for a while,a lot of them! the reason is ive not been happy with tt set up,the sound appeared to be flat in the top end,ive not used my tt for months as ive been making another plinth for it,it just didn't sound how i remembered, also the cartridge has been rebuilt so i put it down to it needing to be run in still. doing some listening this week all of a sudden the cartridge burst into life,it sounded absolutely stunning, bingo i thought its run in and carried on listening to lp's for the next 6 hours,i just didn't want to stop! the next day after work i got home and couldn't wait to spin some vinyl. the sound was flat again,i made up my mind something wasn't right, and sent it back to be inspected, ive just heard back that inside the body around the generator was a big build up of fine metal dust and that it had been causing my problems.i was asked if i had been doing or had any metal work going on in my house. hmm well i have a lathe in the lounge and im a steel fabricator for a living,i don't think there's any need to call colunbo on this one. iam so pleased a fault was found as what little i heard from it was truly stunning,i cant wait to get it back now. looks like i will have to listening to records in a paper suit from now on!

That is useful but alarming information to have as it could happen to any of us and we could be chasing round all over to find out whats wrong with our system?

Arh the evils of spinning black pizza's, you know the the way of the world is transition into seamless music That said nothing more satisfying than finding the bugbear after tearing your hair out for a few weeks! Jamie when you have turned up that replacement in 302 stainless or if the bank balance allows titanium grade 5 or (23 ) then do try some cryogenic treatment increases wear resistance by orders of magnitute that should well and truly prevent any of the unfortunate situation from happening again.

I have been there a few times Jamie with my system. the worst was an small output capacitor on a volume control circuit that had intermittent problems which were time and heat dependent. I tore my system apart many times and nearly drove me mad until it was evaluated and sorted by an audio guru but even he did not find it at first and said it was a tricky one to locate.

Yes you did, but who would think fine metal dust would be picked up from you hands or clothes and be pulled in to the internals of a cartridge.

What amazed me most about the OP was not the problem with the SQ but the fact that Karma has a lathe in his lounge. Considering no one else has mentioned it, you must all think this is quite normal.

If only you'd mentioned it was a small lathe in the first place. Makes a very nice focal point for the room.

I assumed it was just a small lathe so I didn't say anything.

One of my brothers has that Jaws poster signed by all the cast. He has it framed in his hallway. We strongly suspect that the sigs are not real, but it's still pretty cool.

I've got the same lathe, in my dining room/workshop. Which is open plan onto the living room..... Perhaps the metal shavings I make aren't fine enough and I should refine my technique😅

Yeah you're obviously not doing it properly.
I like the concept of a dining-room/workshop. Do you think Ikea do suitable furniture and accessories for that?
