For me it’s the latter. Every other fecking thread on hifi forums these days is about “Raspberry Pi”, Spotify, Volumio or some other computer based shite. Does nobody post about turntables, CD players, Amps or speakers anymore?
Has anyone else noticed this trend? Am I the only one to find it mind-numbing?
Make me a product that is “plug and play”right out of the box, no downloads, no firmware, no fiddling and faffing with a PC and I won’t complain. Make it beautiful, solid, future proof and reliable and I might even listen to it. But it’s not like that, is it? Quite why anyone would want to go to such lengths to play music via utter tat is beyond me.
This was one reason why I started the second forum. I got sick of reading computer audio threads everywhere else. It bores the arse off me and it’s the antithesis of what I seek from hifi and music: Hassle, jargon and crappily made, ugly products. I also reckon it’s a one-way ticket to losing interest in hifi and accepting lifestyle products that play elevator music instead. Great for the makers and peddlers of this stuff because they will either be obsolete in 2-3 years or break down and be beyond economic repair. The days of vintage battleship hifi build and reliability will be gone. So will pride of ownership, because you will be throwing the kit away and replacing it when it goes faulty.
I will never even consider touching streaming until it is completely divorced from PCs, offers some pride of ownership, is completely plug and play and betters the best CD players. I reckon that means I will never do it in my lifetime. Fine by me. Now all I have to do is avoid having to read about it. That seems like a taller order.
Rant over.

Being a computer numpty I completely agree with you Westie. Whenever you read a review it's all acronyms and numbers that I can never understand. When I listen to music via cd or lp, I like to look through the music I own and then decide what I fancy listening to, how do you do that with streaming? The only advantage I can see is, I believe some of the streaming sites recommend new music for you to hear.

You can do that with Spotify, which I did download on my iPad. I would never dream of trying to take that music onto my hifi but I agree listening to stuff you haven’t heard is handy on paper. That said, I looked at it once and it’s never been opened since. A long time ago I tried using a Wadia 170 iPad dock. I had a 160gb iPod and put loads of music on it using Apple lossless. Even this made me lazy and once I started to hit shuffle play my listening dereriorated because it was easier than choosing. The result was that it was more like radio and eventually became background music. Initially it soundef as good as cd (both through a Theta DAC). Over time it revealed itself to be inferior and eventually it became wearing. I genuinely feel streaming will lead many to background music listening because it removes the tactile choice of physical medium. Also the focus on preparing the music to engage with it. It also removes any love of the gear. Liike you, I get irritated by jargon, but I hate the crappy little products more. People are doing backflips over cheap and nasty little chi-if boxes retailing fior tens of pounds and probably costing less than a fiver to make. They won’t be collectible, they won’t last and they won’t be repairable when they fail. Where is the pride of ownership in things like that? As someone who loves the build, design and aesthetics of hifi as much as it’s sound, this irritates me when this stuff comes to dominate forum discussion to the exclusion of proper kit. This is the nub of my frustration. One classic example is a tiny metal case to stick the Raspberry Pi in. It’s doing the rounds of forums and frankly it looks gross to start with. Besides, nothing is going to disguise a Pi. It will never look like a Krell, so i am struggling to see the attraction or the need to discuss it. To me it’s about as interesting as a crochet toilet roll cover. To each his own. I have absolutely no problem with anything people choose to buy and listen to. My rant above was exactly that. An opportunity to let off steam and hopefully alert others to the creeping advance of things that don’t hold a candle build wise to traditional hifi. If forums continue to devote so much space to streaming, it will only help kill off the sort of stuff I’m passionate about. Im all about the gear. I love it and I treasure it’s design, build, aesthetics and ergonomics. It’s this passion that drives me to defend it. Please take my words above in this spirit. They say a picture paints a thousand words, so here’s a contrast between something that interests me and something I’d like to take a hammer to. I’ll leave You to guess which is which.

Good rant and I completely agree.
I hate computers, if I didn't hate them I'd be making a fortune in IT like my mate. Don't want one anywhere near my hi-fi. And I agree these streamers look Sh#t too. Why wouldn't they? just some chips, a power supply and some sockets. Stick a badge on, that's five grand thanks.
Everyone used to bang on about Apple Macs looking good. Bloody geeks, it's still just a computer in a plastic box.
CD was bad enough, I really miss tape decks, they were always the coolest components.

I hate to say it about a brand I like but Naim streamers sound crap to me. But then I guess they are only Naim in “name”.just a computer in a box with a Naim badge.
Tape decks can be beautiful. I wish I’d bought a CR7 or Dragon before prices went up again. Actually an RX-505 would’ve been cool too. I could watch that all day. I had the chance to buy a working Dragon for £600 a few years ago. One of my regrets not grabbing it.

I had a chance at a Dragon even cheaper than that. But some things you just have to let go.
There were some high end streamers at the Cranage show but in terms of kit-lust they just fail. They'd tried to do something by having the boxes angle outwards instead of just being plain, straight sided cases but it just looked silly, design for the sake of it.

No love of computers, streamers or cheap junk here either. I always fancied a Revox Reel to Reel.

Been there, done it and my master tape copies were beaten by their CD counterparts made from the original masters and played on my Micro Seiki player... The high speed B77 sounds a bit 'dirty' by modern standards if merely recording from domestic sources. Much better if you record live, but a DAT machine does it even better (I have an old friend who regularly records live with simple mic placements!).
You know, the Chromecast Audio (I bought mine for sixteen quid in a PC World promotion) sounds bloody good and never makes you feel short-changed.

Naim streamers sound crap, because they are now made entirely for profit, whereas their CD Players were made for sound and enjoyment.
The NDX I owned wasn’t a patch on the CDX2, although as stated elsewhere, neither are a patch for my CXC/Beresford combo at an of 8th the price, so that shows me that Naim CD Players aren’t half as good as I originally thought.
Streaming is a thing, that if done well can sound outstanding. But it isn’t anywhere near as easy to achieve as just buying a CD Player and plumbing it into your system.
I have recently ordered a Rasberry Pi, because what I heard one do a at a good friends place was outstanding and quite unbelievable, when compared to his CD Player which cost around £4k.
My current Logitech Squeezebox Touch isn’t bad, but not quite as good as the CXC.

I think I’m on a similar “journey” with Naim players and still trying to work my way through my thoughts, CDI is just incredibly musical, bouncy and lovable. You can listen all day amd probably will. Cheaper Naim players have a bit of this flavour but aren’t really good enough sonically for me. CDX is a different beast. More aggressive and dynamic. I still enjoyed it amd I suspected it was a more “honest” player than CDI. Then the Copland CDA266 just left it for dead, sonically and musically. It has a fancy SACD chip that is in circuit at all times. No iidea how it works but it’s in some very expensve players. It made me realise that there’s a world beyond Naim. Could I just get another CDI and live with it? Not sure now. It’s more like vinyl than any other player, but it’s inferior to the best turntables in all the areas analogue excels. Then it’s below modern players like the Copland in all the things they do well. Now here’s me being totally honest. The 266 is one of the cheaper Coplands and getting another would make me feel like I didn’t have a good enough player and I’d get the itch to try a more expensive one. Lots of people say the dearer players don’t have the magic of the 266 though. The Byron I have seems great but I have never had a chance to compare it or use it in a proper acoustic with my Spicas so I have no reliable frame of reference. It looks great with my Campion though and I do know that’s a great amp. Things like Beresford and Cambridge just have no “cachet” for me and I wouldn’t use them even if they sounded better. I couldn’t live with their presence because hifi has to appeal to me visually/aesthetically. Totally and utterly shallow, but the only difference between me and many others is that I admit it. It’s no different to someone saying they won’t buy a Skoda, but for some reason it’s frowned upon in hifi circles.

I frown upon you Personally I like stuff that looks like it has been well engineered. The more it looks like a bit of professional gear, the keener I am. I don't think the Naim players look anything special. These days it is mainly blue LEDS that get on my tits. Can't be doing with them. if it doesn't have blue LEDs then it's fine, anything else I like after that is a bonus. The power on light on my Krell is blue, ruins the look of it. I need to get that changed to the proper colour one day when I've got nothing better to do.

I do love those blue LEDs though, especially with white or silver kit. The Campion has the brightest LED I’ve ever seen.

I was spoiled because my very own Micro Seiki CD player (when it was the Ab Sounds demo mule in its first life) absolutely trounced a CD-S at the time (we had them both side by side into a top Naim active system amongst others) and later on, it still sounded better than an Ikemi, CDX-2 and baby Krell when I compared them nearly twenty years ago. High quality digital sound has come tumbling in price over the intervening years though and I reckon today, it's all about facilities, cosmetics and casework...
I'm stunned how good that £5 Chinese DAC sounds with a decent power supply feeding it (£40 from eBay). Output level is lower than CD tradition (possibly no output op-amp and relying on the dac chip itself) but taking this into account, I forget it's being used and enjoy the music instead - I've used various interconnects and it's not very fussy. Currently the Denon 1520 is transport for it used via optical, which isolates the electricals...

I have tried streaming several times, but each time it's seemed more trouble than it's worth, so I've gone back to CDs/records. Also, every time someone 'explains' how computer audio works, I end up confused.
Judge: 'Mr Smith, you have been talking for over an hour now, and, really, I am none the wiser'
FE Smith: 'Possibly not, m'lud, but you are considerably better-infomed'.

In fact i've always maintained it was overpriced crap since I heard it in the 80s. At one time the Cd players sounded pretty good compared with what was available generally but sure some Sony ES and Pioneer high end models were a lot better as well as the Cambridge CD1. Naim is now owned by an investment company who are likely milking the brand for profit. Streaming is now the main business (they only do one CD player now). Digital is cheap to implement now so easy to make something at least as good for far less even in UK let alone China. Cambridge are UK design and Chinese manufacture.

I bought a NAS drive with stiff already on and struggled to even get my laptop to find it, I’m still perplexed as to how much Fay is involved. Plug and play out of the box like a CD player seems a long way away.

Just spent an afternoon trying to get Chromecast audio to set up through a PC only to discover the built in Wi-fi does not support 5ghz. Awaiting dongle and hope that is the answer.

I gave a double challenge in that I’m one of those people who finds PC stuff frustrating and boring, plus I seem to have little or no aptitude for IT. Apple have made a fortune from the existence of people like me. iPad has been a godsend for me but it’s given me expectations that everything just needs a tap of the screen and it works like magic. You can’t do that with a PC.

Of course if you keep buying the latest spec products maybe not but if plug and play doesn't work for some reason you need to delve around. No way will I pay the premium Apple products demand.

I used Apple products, because I find they sync successfully and do exactly what they say on the tin. Whilst I work in IT, I am not at all technical, so don't want to reconfigure this, or modify the code on that... I just want something that works and Apple do this in abundance.

I don't understand the appeal of reel to reel recorders. Unless you have access to high quality original tape recordings, they can only put out a sound (nearly) as good as what they have recorded. Original tapes are rare, old and likely to suffer from the usual age related tape issues, print through, shedding oxide etc. Also, using one requires a fair bit of faffing about.
I'd sooner stick with my nice MiniDisc deck and I don't even use that!

Reel to reels look cool. Ali uses his to tape stuff off of Sky Arts Channel, gets a great sound.
I've got a Sony DAT deck but I've never used it. I looked about a bit once for some pre-recorded tapes but all I could find was a Level 42 album and the bloke was asking a pony for it.

Reel to reel is cool, but how long does this last with tapes now costing a fortune, few people to service them now properly and anything modern and 'digital' in a different league fidelity wise...
I kinda liked Mini Disc too. The later codec used was very good and Sony kept the highs and Teac/Tascam the bass a little more. I suppose with YouTube sounding so good these days and easy file storage, I don't know if recording formats like these are necessary now?
