Still no sign of the PCB. I think the post office are struggling with COVID-19 restrictions. The 686 may have to be put on hold, while we wait and see if there is any financial fallout from this Pandemic, and how it will effect us. yes your right,i sent my bearings off on tuesday,i paid for next day delivery and paid extra to have it in the AM,it arrived thursday.

My (Alans) resistors arrived thursday. Typically, the day after I ordered replacements.

The PCB has finally arrived. It will give me something to do next week whilst I am on holiday, if it is raining.

It was raining.... Any tips on fitting the 4 MOSFETS? I have not done this yet, as I am slightly unsure of the best/easiest way to do this. I probably should have done it first....

Do I need to add some flux under the body? I will pre-tin the PCB where the legs fit, but what do I do to make sure the MOSFET is soldered down properly? I saw some nifty looking solder paste and a hot air gun on youtube. It looked really cool, but it is way above what I need for this.

You will also notice my big brown resistors. I bought them due to the spec of them, but I forgot to check the size.... I may replace them at a later date with a smaller version, once I have completed the board and everything checks out ok.

If those resistors are the right value, I wouldnt worry.

Flux is recommended by Tom and on the video.

Yes, but what type of flux? It is a minefield. Do I do it with solder paste? Some basic flux, and solder?
I need to buy some flux to do it, so I was hoping some more experienced guys could give me some pointers. It looks like a big area to solder, and it is the first time I am doing this.

I use a roisin flux pen , when i solder smds put some on the pad and tin it before putting the compent on and reheating, works fine. Also I use lead solder as it flows better at lower temp .

Personally I would just solder them with standard multi core solder.
There doesn't seem much room to get the soldering tip onto the tab of the device so I would think of cutting the legs shorter so you could move the device across a bit. Beware of the extent of the tab on the back of the device so it doesn't short to the pads for the leads.
I wouldn't hold the iron on the tab for the length of time in the video, just long enough for the solder to flow on the exposed area of the tab and pcb pad.

I'd paste flux all over the pad, solder down the legs first, the do the back of the pad institu feeding the solder into a big fat tipped iron.
Should have done the mosfets first.

If I need better access, I will pop the diodes off the board.

Thinking about this, I may need a better soldering iron if I continue with this project. My current Maplin one only has fine tips, so will not be best to solder Mosfets. I do have a fixed temp iron, but that is only 25W, but has a wide tip.
Apparently it is a Duratool D02265, so I should be able to some better tips.

Useful to have different tip sizes, looks fine what you did there.

I only use one size and vary solder size for small parts, 0.3mm for smt stuff. I reckon I'm heading towards needing magnification for the smaller stuff soon. Ican still manage 0603 without any trouble, but i can tell my focus isnt what it was.

I know from recent experience that this gets easier the more you do. When I started I bought some dirt cheap resistors and pcbs from ebay just so I could practise my soldering. Cost about£5 for a load of them . Really helped.

Molex connectors are now fitted. I just need the relays now, and I can start the tests.
