This is going to be an expensive build.
Two Mod686 modules - $1k Two Power686 PCB - $120 One ISS PCB - $69 Two Guardian686 PCBs - $120
So about $1.3k just for the PCBs. And add 20% for VAT etc. Ouch.....

The 286 I have is in a fairly compact case but does run +/-36V for full rated output.
After experiments with the 86 build to convert to dual mono I realised it was essential to convert the 286 also. However there isn't room in the case to fit toroids so I installed a second SMPS, I had to extend the case a little at the back to do this. I am completely satisfied with the outcome.

You've got me thinking, I might add another psu board to each mono block to feed each pcb separately. I've got VA to spare in the traffo so the limit on power output is the fact that there's one psu pcb per two amp boards.

A question, yes another one.... How difficult is it to to populate the MOD686 boards? I would say my skill level is advanced beginner when it comes to soldering. I have replaced some surface mounted components on PCBs before. It will bring the cost down slightly.

A lot of people save a few quid with that method, then wish they hadnt when they've finished lol.. Board comes pre populated and checked. If you make a mistake, how confident are you that you can find the fault?

It will be difficult, for sure. However, if I take my time in building these I think I could manage.
I would start with the simpler PCBs.

Buy the smt fitted 686 boards and do the connectors, through hole caps and output devices yourself, buy the bare psu boards.
I'll wind the coils for you, FOC.

I'd solder all the parts to the boards except the output devices. Mount boards to heatsinks, mount output devices and solder them in situ. That way you are guaranteed no tight legs or alignment stress.
Cos getting six of them lined up perfectly will be a bugger. Two was tricky enough.
I do bonzer coils, if anyone has need for 1mm coils let me know, I'm well stocked.

I will have a think about if I want to “risk” it. By the time I get around to ordering the bits, I may not have a choice.

Just realised I only need one Guardian 686 for a dual mono build. I might order that, and see how I get on with building it.
Well! I have ordered it. It will be my first step towards a new amp.

Where do you get your parts from? It looks like it is about €55 for the parts, but not everything is in stock.

Mouser are missing the specific resistor. A KOA Speer MF1/4DCT52R4702F
I assume I can replace this with any other 47kOhm 1% resistor without worrying too much? The other missing parts are available in two weeks. Molex Mega-Fit connectors

Mouser have delivered the goods. Just waiting for a Molex mega-fit connector, and a PCB before I can start.

I am going to have to. Not sure how long it will take the PCB to make it over to Europe in the current climate.

Still no sign of the PCB. I think the post office are struggling with COVID-19 restrictions.
The 686 may have to be put on hold, while we wait and see if there is any financial fallout from this Pandemic, and how it will effect us.
