If it's cheaper to buy 5 then I suppose yes, then send the remainder to Oli or myself (please) rather than trow them away

haha but no it isn't, they're £2 each or £10 for 5 (AS AN EXAMPLE)so my question remains, in any area where matching "might" be worth doing do most folk buy more than they need in order to get the matching more accurate or do they just buy what they need and save £6 (IN THIS EXAMPLE)?

Whooah. The Mshow preamp that I bought and modified didn't match the modified Weiliang preamp for ultimate performance, even though they use the same volume control chip. So after Oli had borrowed the Weiliang to give it the once over and returned it this morning, I set about trying to find out why the Mshow was lagging behind. It turned out that whoever designed it hadn't read the PGA2311 data sheet properly . To get the best out of the chip you have to keep digital and analogue supplies separate and join the digital and analogue ground planes in one place only. The daft twonk who did it only used the positive analogue supply to also feed the digital supply pin, sharing the analogue ground as well . So with two pcb track cuts and two links fitted the digital supply is now separate, there are 3 regulators on board so one would expect this to be the case at first glance, but no. Now it is modified properly the performance is now stellar and matches the Weiliang, in fact might be even a smidge more transparent. Sitting here gobsmacked at the sound of vinyl, retipped Lyra Clavis via K&K step up into Salas VPI phono stage, then through Mshow line control pre into Neurochrome 286 power amp. Speakers are Quad ESL57's with additional super tweeters, Superb.

Your a clever chap Alan, only wish I had your skills. I would love to hear this set up now, it must have transformed your system since I last heard it?

Your a clever chap Alan, only wish I had your skills. I would love to hear this set up now, it must have transformed your system since I last heard it? Thinking about it the changes have been pretty intensive since you last visited, with a consequential uplift in sound. One of the unexpected uplifts that has really given more solidity and heft and a real sense of completeness to the sound was replacing the sub woofer lead. Because my sub and amplifier are separate (I didn't want to build the amp into the sub enclosure) there is a 2 metre output lead. When I built it many moons ago I used some figure 8 2.5mm bog standard cable, as I used to in those days. I changed it to OCC cable and bingo, a fantastic result.

BigBottle under test in the system, sounding excellent: My selected case has arrived and is looking rather nice. It is a perfect size for building with exposed valves on the top. More pictures as assembly progresses.

All finished now and under test with some good choons. The 'rear end' view .. Very pleased with the fit and finish and the way it has gone together. As for sound it is gob-smacking, playing some jazz, LA4 'Just Friends' and the attack and clarity is phenomenal.

It's not good form to rave about your own designs Alan lol
It's been a horrible experience, loving the phonostage and not being able to be as vocal as I usually am.
I absolutely love mine and there is another little upgrade on the way in the form of matched Fets.
Fantastic ay!

Latest acquisition, an Innuos Zen Mk2 media server, with linear power supply on top. Now I feel I have entered the digital age proper. However it was a bugger to find out how to control the thing via a Chromebook computer. Fortunately there are people who know how to access things and what to type into the search engine to achieve such things. Many thanks to them. I shall be loading all the CD's onto it then storing them all up the loft. That will give a lot more space in the large storage unit in the music room.

He was to access the Zen settings. However that doesn't allow you to play files so further digging was required.

Your Topping D90 really deserved a better supply of files than you were using and this is just the job. Well done sir. Gains are to be had and you are always willing to try and find them. Respect.

A lot of what I am being told about the chord gear, is that it's pretty much destined to struggle on the measurements VS the best DACS out there but I have heard the DAVE and I would have one if I had the money. However, I seriously doubt that the Quetest would trouble the Topping D90 in either the listening or the measuring. I would happily snap up a D90 based on the spec alone and from what I have been told about the chip, being somewhere between the BurBrown in my PecanPi and the Sabre DAC chip, which I have heard in the IAN Canada DAC and the D50. IMUO (uneducated opinion) Its probably the sweet spot for most of us.
