I met up with Mark (YNWAN) and Radford Revival's Will Moores today to explore Bristol Hifi Show and here's a few note's I patched together from the visit. Mark took photos of every room and may post these later if he gets time. This is far from an exhaustive show report, just a few thoughts from the day: Great meeting up again Mark...great day, great company and lots to see. Look forward to seeing your pictures. Stand-outs for me included: - Falcon Acoustics new 1/4 wave stand mount kit speaker which sounded very good and at the price was a bargain;
- Klipsch Heresy....I wasn't expecting to like these as they'd always been described as brash...they were in fact refined, well tuned and excellent sounding. Loved the retro looks (marmite I know) too;
- The aptly named "Curvi Audio" room contained a pair of their curvy Curvis...naturally. This year however the difference from previous incarnations was the use of a full range BMR without any need of a partnering tweeter (no blu-tak in sight on this pair which was used to attach a tweeter for some photos previously!). These are low sensivity (as with all BMRs) 1/4 wave bass loaded CNC machined cabinets with a single BMR mounted front top. They sounded excellent and had good off axis response too. I didn't get to ask the cost but was told later they weren't cheap. Bearing in mind it's a crossoverless single driver design, perhaps there was a little too much optimism on that part but they were reasonably well made and sounded good.
- ATCs, despite low efficiency and some monster amplification needed, they sounded excellent. The little stand mount ATC 11 was truly exceptional for the size, quite simply unbelievable bass response and clean, tidy tuning and they were the proverbial pint-sized speakers delivering quart sized sounds! I left with new respect for the current ATC offerings from the guys from Stroud.
- Rega...lots of great entry level and mid range decks as well as their new flagship. The one I heard (I couldn't make out which it was) sounded great
- The focal Kanta Nr2's (£6,995/pair) were also one of the show's surprises and were easily one of the best sounding rooms for me, along with the Klipsch, ATC and Falcon Acoustics rooms. I didn't, however, take much store of the isolation guys (sorry...forgot who they represented) making silly claims about some of their products. Their speaker elevation isolation platforms thingys changed the sound slightly but they would do anyway raising them up off the floor. I didn't have the heart to explain why (slight loss of bass and bass reinforcement mistaken for "tauter bass").
Lots of usual show stuff...mediocre sounding expensive stuff and not so expensive stuff. Close inspection of a few brands led to a little disappointment as things were literally just a veneer hiding very cheap construction but sporting very long price tags. I'm afraid Fyne was one of those for me although I do like the F10 sound, corners were cut where I hadn't really expected them to be.Part of my reason for going was it's the one time every year I and a number of hifi industry colleagues and friends get together for a chinwag. Many of them were here this year, including Nick Lucas, Graham Tricker, Jerry Bloomfield and a few others. Managed a brief few polite words with Noel Keywood and caught up with Jason Kennedy after a 7 year gap from last speaking with him....where does time go!? Major disappointment of the show for me was Lockwood's room. I really didn't want it to be, but sadly for me, they didn't do too many favours for their hard work. Lots of posters explaining proud heritage but they had easily the worst sounding room of the show for me. How they quite managed to get those drive units to sound so dead and two dimensional I suspect may have been a function of the cab and crossovers used and I strongly suspect the lack of any bass might point towards woofers being wired in the wrong polarity? I don't know that to be the case but that's exactly how they sounded to my ears. Altogether the best Bristol show for me for some years. Lots of footfall, a few new and exciting products, some great showing by some UK household names in hifi which was great to see. The only really critical comment was come on guys....the music....just, well...."NO!". the same inane boom-boom rubbish from many of the rooms, which was hardly any way to showcase such talent. Why do they do this? Yes, we even had Dire Straights and Hugh Masekela blaring out from some rooms, but in fairness they were some of the better choices of music and that says something about the rubbish being played! All in all though a very enjoyable show and hopefully we have Mark's photos to look forward to seeing. [/ul]

Some Pictures. Proac room downstairs. Only big room I got an acceptable picture due to people moving around. Only room with Michell Orbe being used. Elipson Room - decent sound from these speakers. Kerr Acoustics Speakers, Clearaudio TT with DS audio Optical Cartridge (Exposure amplification). Exposure Room. Michell room just had 2 Gyrodecs set up. Proac speakers and Sugden amp. Got some info on the new cartridges (rather expensive IMO). Hegel room. Surprising sound from KEF LS50 using their H590 amp. Played loud with non of the often heard KEF brightness. Harbeth P3ESR New XD version (HL5 in second room). Sounded better than previous incarnations I have heard but could be down to amp (Hegel). Playing at too low volume. Voxativ valve amp and Hagen speakers (Only valve set up I saw). New brand to me (Germany). Avid Room. More pictures to come!

Funnily enough, the styling of the harbeth room reminded me of their sound lol.

Bristol Show continued. Fyne Audio. The F1-5 produced a surprisingly good sound. Quite impressive for such a small box. The Audio Note Room. Von Gaylord below. Good sound from this set up. Origin Live room. Funk Firm + Curvi speakers (compact horn) Kuzma (display only). Klipsch (RP500M?), Musical Fidelity amplification plus Project TTs. New Klipsch Heresy IV with Project Amplification and Project Signature TT. Nice sound - warm and smooth presentation. Rogers hi-fi room playing through LS3/5A. Surprisingly full sound in this size of room - mounted on sub/bass unit come stand. The source was from prerecorded tapes using Revox. Looking down back of LS3/5A support reveals twin bass drivers facing rear. Falcon Acoustics Room - demonstrating kit IMF100 Transmission Line speakers. Kog Audio room.

Nice pictures. Klipsch speakers on stands were R51s.
I thought that the Gaylord audio room had a few issues. Initially not too bad sounding from their little pyramid standmounters but there were clearly some glare issues in the crossover region when the music was turned up a little. The amps looked superficially ok but it was hard to judge whether some of the glare was down to the speakers or the partnering power amp (which would have to be biased pretty hot to achieve the claimed outputs). The claims being made about thepreamp being "...best preamp in the world....non better!" made me chuckle. The little Chinese fella doing the demo was a really nice friendly chap but I found the constant boasts and claims being made whilst we were just trying to listen to what was being played a little off-putting.
I thought that whilst ok sounding the big (and very expensive) proac's were just ok and nothing special for a speaker of that size/design/price. They had a tendency towards a little upper brightness and their smaller siblings in the more affordable categories were definitely in the "smiley face" tuning camp....not for me I'm afraid.
LS50's sounded ok...even handed and good imaging but really, they weren't a patch on either the smaller ATC stand mounts nor subjectively speaking (for me anyway) the smaller Fyne audio offerings (there's just something special about point source loudspeakers, especially when done as nicely as the miniature Fyne offerings). I do think though that the Kefs offered better VFM.
I also thought that the Elipson room (when I visited) was banging out far too much bass and it wasn't the room at fault it was the chap who turned up the subs or whatever he was using in terms of music so that the bass swamped everything. There were too many rooms with uncontrolled and overblown bass which I'm pretty sure was more the set up and music chosen that the room effects. Very few seemed to get the balance right on the day, but Falcon, ATC and Klipsch definitely did, as did Fyne, Focal and a few others.

errrrr..those were not Klipsch Heresy's Lol! They were the smaller Klipsch R41Ms or R51s. These are the Heresys: I do like the look of those and I'm a sucker for large drivers

I changed the photo (downloaded the wrong one). They had both the small Klipsch and the Heresy in adjoining rooms.

Seems to have been a decent variety of kit. Going back to the 90s, I’d leave a show feeling like there were a few things I’d like to take home. I didn’t really identify anything form the pics I’d like to try or even hear.
Surprising how many rooms had modest speakers on show.
Did anyone else see stuff that made them curious to try?

Well, I'd certainly like to try both the ATC SCM7 and SCM11's, the Klipsch Heresys, the new Rega mid range turntables and arms and...oh wait...I've run out of budget! Point is, I think that there was plenty on show that offered, possibly for the first time in ages, real value and quality for the money and certainly very impressive performance.

Had a good wander around today, not a lot that stood out. I liked the Votavix room, also the Wilson Benesch room was sounding very good. ATC room not too shabby either. A lot of very mediocre sounds around though.

So it is in the Marriott Hotel, Lower Castle Street. This gives you a nice little walk to the Pieminister restaurant in St Nicholas Market for some decent food. Just remember it is closed on Sundays. Pieminister

They were actually very refined...I was expecting brash from comments received from others who have heard earlier versions but these were really very listenable and very likeable.

Audioaddicts outing for next year maybe??? It may move next year if the idiot Mayor of Bristol is able to put his all diesel ban into action. Hope Boris puts a block on it. Half the show goers won't be able to get anywhere near it.

Half the show goers won't be able to get anywhere near it. The Mayor's a bit of a climate activist fanatic He has Greta Thunberg there presently and the centre of Bristol is at at a standstill from the West End to Old Market across the centre as they've shut lots of roads in the centre for the organised rally against climate change. People have driven in from all over to attend it wouldn't you know (rolls eyes). Given that all of the CO2 that the UK produces, only 6% is down to cars and commercial vehicles (I think including shipping) and a vast majority is down to gas central heating in homes so why aren't more nuclear power stations being built? They'd do well to scrap gas power, remove these silly barriers to people driving and accept that we could achieve close to 2/3rds improvement in the reduction of CO2 emissions by tackling our power infrastructure and leaving cars (and motorbikes) alone. The misguided Ms Thunberg is being used by Globalists and their pals in the UN to push their agenda and has been badly informed. Rant over....I'll get off my soap box now.

Good for Klipsch if they've tamed the Heresy at last but kept the sense of occasion they always put onto the proceedings. Totally opposite to the speakers I get lumbered with that need a zillion Watts to overcome the crossover inertia Ms Thunberg always looks so damned miserable. Maybe her condition prevents her from feeling happiness or joy in life.
