What do you guys make of this old timer? Whenever I watch a video of him, I detect some arrogance.

I remember him from back in the 80s. Yes a degree of arrogance, but I reckon we owe him a lot for the part he played in the valve revival. Got good ears too. That said, he knows how to charge as much as he can get away with.

His products were badly made, expensive, not always reliable and ultimately pretty crap sounding I remember. He emigrated, was somehow able to put fifty year old Snell designs back into production with a few bling bits inside and hemp cones and charge thousands for them and despite making truly awful sounds at HiFi shows, the sheeple loved him and his products and still do - baaa!
He caused havoc here, emigrated and caused havoc there too by all accounts.
I'd sooner not remember him to be honest - let him disappear up his backside never to return. Far better people worth talking about I think.

It isn't my cup of tea and you could argue that Marantz do the same sort of sound for a lot less money, and I don't like the speakers at all. But all that aside if you want that golden glow/ glittery tinkle type sound it's not that bad. Easier to listen to than a lot of high end kit. Enchanting with some music.

Far better people worth talking about I think. He has Andy Grove who did the Hi-fi World stuff 'designing' his electronics. Current stuff looks well built and I have heard musical sounds at shows. However though the systems play music they are ultimately quite coloured. I don't get the daft priced stuff which is differentiated with fancy components. Based on what I have heard the more 'entry level ' gear sounds as good. No originality here just Condo, Snell and Systemdek models that have been modified / updated. Apparently he bought worldwide rights for Audio Note outside Japan and is able to produce cheaper versions which Legally the Japanese company can do nothing about.

I remember the Audio Innovations amps were designed by Erik Andersson and I thought they were great. Yes,initially unreliable but they did fiix the issues eventually. The Voyd/Innovations/Snell combos offered one of the most compelling and convincing ways to make music AFAIC. I never got a Voyd, although I came close. I have had a few Snell/Innovations pairings though. I had a pair of AN-K speakers later on too, but they sounded pretty much like Snell Ks.
My view of Peter Qvortrup is coloured by the great sounds I have heard and had. Also by the fact that at the time nobody gave valves the time of day. He was viewed as a heretic and if it wasn’t for that arrogance, he probably wouldn’t have succeeded in making such an impact.

The AI 500 integrated was like a blanket placed over the music, all soft and warm and bland, but used with spitty pro-Acs one kind of balanced the other. As said elsewhere, a kind of kick reflex against the harsh Linn/CB-Naim domesticated PA system sound i reckon.
Funny thing is that Croft also began making soft toned products in his early days, yet these were rather more mature sounding and far more reliable if not as stylish. You had a Croft series 5 power amp Shane, kept it a few weeks and sold it on, yer daftee... It's a lot better than a lot of the crap you've had since if you did but know it...

Your past - it's MY PAST for feck's sake. You weren't born when a lot of this stuff was being sold new.
The Croft was potentially one of the best things you ever owned and I think it's a shame you chop and change so quickly without getting to know the gear you've owned so fleetingly.

I was born in 1989. I thought I was older than the series 5 stuff.

Maybe, but not by much. I met HiFi Dave and all the valvey stuff he used to sell in 1988 - it all went uphill from then on

This 'chop and change' habit will come to an end soon. Even Andrew is doing much better than me nowadays S.

I seem to lack the will these days. Almost everything I buy doesn’t even get fired up. Some of it I don’t even bother looking at. I love the minimalism of just having the two Sonneteers. Paired with the Duevels they look beautiful and that’s important to me bacisee it puts me at ease so that I can enjoy the music.
