What? It's not Sunday, why the update?
Well, loads of things are happening and rather annoyingly a lot of things are either being delivered or will be delivered just after I get back from Holiday. I may have some very exciting news regards some valve gear that I'm trying to purchase, but more on that over the weekned. I'm also trying to get 25-50 hours on the latest JICO SAS/S stylus for my SC35C shure MM cartridge. Things are going very well at the moment and this cart combo really is sounding excellent with all genre's of music. So much so that I'll be doing some more research into the upper levels of MM/MI carts other than the usual Ortofon 2MB culprit which I really rate. I've got some more experiments with absorption panels and some more updates on my main valve system. Loads to come.

HELLO!
I'm back from Espania and finally back on the internet! After a few really annoying days of net-less-ness I managed to get re-netted. Anway, updates today are for two systems. Firstly the main valve system with the 301 is having yet more work done, this time the SME 3012 is having several new components fitted at Audio Origami, I'm thinking of renaming this tonearm Triggers broom, hopefully this will cure the problem of the right channel dropping, the whole system worked without fault for several weeks with my SME V-12 fitted. I'm still looking into a new plinth design for the 301, a two arm design, probably Permali, still not really decided which way to go, I've not taken this too seriously as it's a long term project and I new need to buy some Permali.
Now, the main news is about System 3 who's contents I detailed a two or three posts ago. This system is turning out to be a really good "odd and sods" system, originally this was (and still is I suppose), my "REAL SOUND" system. A system dedicated to explore Duelund components and cabling of a vintage era, inspired by Jeff Day over on Jeff's Place blog. The system has seen a few updates. Firstly a new JICO SAS/S stylus for the SC35C, this is just about broken in now, it must have had about 20-30 hours on its, possibly another 20-30 hours. It sounds very very good. I set about optimising the SC35C with my EAR 834P clone phonostage but things took a rather unusual twist. I recieved an e-mail from a friend of Len Gregory - The Cartridge Man, claiming to have his old phonostage for sale, a Croft of custom design no less. A few emails later, a few quid exchanged over the net and a deal was done. Several days later I recieved this.....
Fit and finish are not the best, but there are several things which made me purchase this. Firstlty, it's a Croft MM stage which I wanted, I originally wanted the last 25RS two box jobbie but trying to find one was proving, difficult. Secondly, look at those bloody 5691's!!!!! I've always loved the 6SL7 valve, and especially the 5691, ny Croft Epoch was modded a few years ago to output via the 5691's, now I have a MM phonostage which does the same. Thirdly look at the transformers and power regulation, I'm no expert but it looks pretty over-specc'd. I might even have early version of the RS two box jobbie but all squeezed into one box (PLEASE COMMENT IF YOU CAN CONFIRM THIS). Fourth, I really, really regret selling my Croft 25 Mirco-Pre which had an excellent little phonostage but I couldn't keep that pre whilst I had an oppotunity to get the Croft Epoch. I think this will work really really well in my main 301 valve system where I have a really heavily modded Croft Epoch pre- so I'm hoping for synergy, this may end up being the phonostage I use for when I feel like experimenting with MM's or playing microgrove/MONO recordings which I'm beginning to really appreciate. I'm not too happy with the two huge pieces of COAX but they do seem to be making some lovely sounds.
The soundstage is still in a state of development. The SC35C is still in need of another 10-20 hours before I think I can start to make any series comments. I will highlight a few things. The presentation is addictive, I've been grabbing records from all genre's, early DECCA MONO recordings have been sounding excellent, the latest Soft Machine album (prog) is just floating around the soundstage, yes notes seem to last longer than they should, everything is in it's place and just sounds "right". Plenty of tone, yep I'm in a happy place. I can't wait to play around with this in the main 301 system. Right, I'm off to see if I can score some more vinyl in the charity shops of West Yorkshire... Offski's..

Interesting phono stage Andy.
Firstly it is the only Croft stage that I have seen that appears to have 'swapped ends'. By that I mean (from the front) the mains/psu is on the left and the MM stage is on the right.
Secondly I don't think it is necessarily an early RS two box jobbie, from what I know Glenn used to use oversize transformers in the two box variants. From what I can see there are 3 transformers and the smaller part is a choke, usually Glenn used RC filtering, this uses LC filtering. I'm guessing the third transformer may be required for the power regulator valve heater, to provide isolation and possibly an unusual voltage. What is the type number for regulator valve?
The two 'huge pieces of COAX' look like air spaced TV antenna cable, so they will be low capacitance. Glad it is sounding really good to you.

Thanks for the info so far Alan. Anyways the valve compliment is x3 RCA 5691 my all time fave of the 6SL7 variety. It had x1 6336B valve which I think is a valve used in PSU regulation and x1 CV4004 and x1 8089 both Mullard valves (I know I have this valve wrong as the numbers are very worn, so best guess).

Yes the 6336B is the regulator valve. It requires 6.3V at 5A for the heater, hence the third transformer.

I doubt that the active circuitry is any different to Glenn's usual design.
The only thing I can see that is different is the screen connection from the input sockets. I'm guessing the screen on the coax doesn't carry the signal, there appears to be additional wires with thiner wires twisted around them for the ground connections.

The Shure SC35C + JICO/S stylus - a few early notes = PART I
This combo is something that I decided I wanted to try after I had the Shure M55e and JICO SAS/S stylus combo. I was hugely impressed with the M55e combo and rather being a bit ham fisted knackered the SAS/S stylus. Anyways, after a little research I decided to try the SC35C, something which was used as a broadcast cartridge and comparable (to an extent) to the later shue V15 models. My sample has been modded in that I decided to add a PARADOX aluminium body, maybe not the best option but further experimentation may be needed here. This SC35C still needs another 10 hours or so usage to bed in, currently I would estimate its probably had about 30 hours. My speakers are an old pair of IMF Supercompact II's which have been slightly modded in that I have recapped them and replaced the speaker binding posts with some solid copper jobbies. The caps on the speakers have bedded in, they have had well over 100 hours so the sonic output should be stable. This experiment was originally started to look for a cheaper alternative than a Ortofon 2M black (2MB). I reviewed the 2MB in my third hi-fi system extensively earlier in the year and concluded it was the finest MM cartridge I'd ever heard, albeit with a few caveats, mainly, it was a PITA to set up and was very prone to excessive surface noise, but the sonic presentation more than compensated for these minor issues.
Currently, the SC35C is performing very well. It produces a very well defined soundstage. Soundstage is not the deepest I've heard and not the same depth as the 2MB but not that far away. Width of soundstage is equally on par with the 2MB. It is extremely easy to follow individual instruments in a complex piece of music I would say that a major bonus of the SC35C + JICO/S combo is lack of surface noise, it is far less prone to this problem than the Ortofon 2MB. Setup for the SC35C is less troublesome as well. I will detail my setup procedure at some point but for now let's just stick to the early stages of this experiment and enjoy the jormey. Lets have a look at costs for the Ortofon 2MB, prices seem to be around the £525 bracket whilst the Ortofon 2M Black LV250 top out at £1000ish. I will start to look into the LVB250 at some point, but let's remember we are at the beginning of our journey. The SC35C can be purchased for £100 -£200 delivered, and then there is the argument about mexican or american SC35C, I'll get into that again at some point into the future. The JICO SAS/B can be purchased for $252 (£196) or the JICO SAS/S for $349 (£271) + lets say £70 import duty so between £350 - £420 for a SC35C and a choice of stylii, still cheaper than £525 for the 2MB. The price of the SC35C + JICO combo is cheaper than the 2MB and then we have the very sticky subject of replacement Stylii for the 2MB which start at £435. So to conclude the SC35C/JICO combo is cheaper irrespective of whatever combo you purchase and the replacement stylii are also markedly cheaper. Now, are you holding onto your listening room chair seat, we are looking at £849 for a replacementy stylii for the Ortofon 2M LVB 250. So > £1K for the top of the range MM from Ortofon. I have not looked into other MM's from other companies, so maybe you could suggest something that topples the Ortofon offerings, PLEASE COMMENTS, LET'S MAKE THIS A DEBATE.

OK, enough for now, stay tuned.... The 2M black and LVB will "SUFFER" (IMHO) from the Shibata stylus. This is is where all of your surface noise comes from IME. The 2M black, and LVB I am sure, benefit from a FGS and then they take on a whole new level of performance. If you could get that done, I think your MM journey would probably end pretty abruptly. That said, I really liked a Shure cart I had back in the day and it's been a niggling regret that I sold it. I can't remember exactly what it was at the moment so I'll have a trawl through the archives to try and find out.

I have a Cadenza black with FGS and they still have the same problem, sound excellent but really excel in surface noise. I agree Shibata does have a similar problem with surface sonics! That's interesting...I have markedly less surface noise with FGS than Shibata.

Just thinking about your system Andrew I have always noticed a lot more surface noise when using valve components (even at the same db level as using SS), especially pre and power amps. Even if there is very little to no hum/noise from the speakers whilst nothing is playing. The effective audible background 'gain' noise from valves seems to be higher than using SS equipment. If that makes sense?
I recently ran a valve pre in the system (which was very quiet with nothing playing) but surface noise on vinyl was certainly higher with the only variable being a change to a valve pre.

Yes I would agree with that there is more noise with certain pre/power valve amps, altough I have some valves pieces of equipment which are completely silent, Croft Pre's especially.

A wee small update tonight.
The trials and tribulations of running several valve systems and loads of vintage gear! Tracking down a lost channel on one system is proving difficult, I think it could be a dodgy tonearm cable. I now have to repair a power amp, well replace some speaker binding posts which got damaged years ago and I decided to finally get around to replacing them, I honestly don't think they are the cause of the lost channel but it dosen't hurt to have new and get a job out of the way! My third system is sounding really really really good. I decided to try my Croft Epoch preamp in this system and it just didn't gel so the old Radford SC25 has gone back into place and things just sound correct. The new JICO stylus for the SC35C cartridge is now more or less run in. I think I've added 40-50 hours now so i'd say the suspension and stylus should be broken in. The new Croft phonostage sounds sublime, it just make music. I took a big gamble on this and I'm glad to say that it fits in well and is a keeper. The croft has replaced my old EAR834P clone (which I'll be keeping) I have a soft spot for that clone.
I have been experimentng with bamboo and sorbothane footers under all my equipment in System3. It's been quite weird as I think I've over damped in places and some of the vitality of presentation has been robbed. I have experimented with variations of these two materials and have to say that soundstage does appear to change depending on how and where I damp. Presently the power amp has 6mm sorbothane under it's feet whilst the preamp has 6mm sorbothane under its feet and then sits on a bamboo board. The croft has a similar setup to the preamp. My 401 is sitting on a bamboo board which has been treated with silent coat on the underside. All-in-all things sound very good. I would say that System3 is virtually complete but I need to do some further tweaks with turntable setup and maybe cable dressing (which isn't the best). I'll soon be able to sit down and make some notes about sonic presentation.

SUNDAY NIGHT - UPDATE NIGHT
As I've grown older, I've learned to be patient. I've been looking at the 301 system again and think the loss of a channel might be a tonearm cable altough I can't prove this despite borrowing another tone arm cable last week from a forum member (you know who you are, thanks)! So, the cable is going back to it's builder to see if he can diagnose any problems. Meanwhile, things have been moving forward on System3 also known as the "REAL SOUND" system in that I decided to finally install my Panzerholz SME tonearm mount which I made ages ago. So, here's a pretty crappy shot of what it looks like.
And, yes I do think it makes a difference, subtle, but it all counts. System3 still needs tweaking and today hasn't been that day, unfortunately. I did manage to plug in my big Sondex S100 into the system for a quick couple of hours and have to say that KT88's in the system sound just as good as 300B's. I must keep things real and remember that System3 was cobbled together to explore Duelund products, old MM carts, and 300B valves. The Sondex has had a little repair work in that I had to replace a speaker binding post. Finally I thought I'd post this for all those that enjoy messing around with old MM carts. I love Shure carts and I think I'd like to try a Shure V15 VXmR at some point with a JICO SAS/(R) or (S) after market stylus. Ah well, that's for another day.

SUNDAY NIGHT = SYSTEM UPDATE NIGHT!
Not a great deal happening with the system over the last week or two. I have been doing my favourite thing which is to seek out old classical recordings, especially DECCA and then clean the hell out of the vinyl with suitable degreasing and ultrasonic cleaning agents. I also purchase any records which I feel are of interest and sometimes I find a record so obscure that I will sometimes research the history of the record just for pure pleasure and then the record becomes an old friend that I care for, just a custodian until the next owner comes along. My record collection is sitting under the 2000 mark and I'm running out of space altough my daughter did make a new record storage box out of an old card board box which now sits pride of place in the listening room, it's amazing work for an eight year old. I have about 20/30 records which are sitting in the new storage box in various states of assessment and cleaning. I have several which are keepers and have been cleaned, several which have been cleaned and are now going through assessment and then about 10 which haven't been touched.
Now for an interesting aside. We have out dog food delivered and weirdly it comes boxed with wool packing, very good quality. So, I'm thinking I could make some absorption panels with this stuff. I just need to cut the wood and bingo I'm in business. I have enough packing now for quite a few small wall based panels or maybe at a push a couple of large panels, we shall see. This is a project which frankly can wait, I'm having too much fun System 3. I have been messing around with speaker placement and it looks like things are about as good as I can get them given the limitation of space. I'm not complaining I have a very nice third system playing away here whilist I type listening to jazz and drinking single malt, My main 301 based system is still out of comission due to a what I think is a dodgy tonearm cable. I'm waiting for a certain Greek/Welsh bloke to start residing back in Wales again before I can do anything to get the 301 system up and playing again. I have felt quite tempted buying a simple tonearm cable or even making my own up whilst I wait but I just be bothered with the expense or waste of my time waiting for the bits to turn up, so I'll quite happily wait and get to know System 3 more intimately.
System 3 may need some new 300b valves and what a rabbit hole that can be. I here a slight russle noise through one speaker and I realise one of the 300b valves is slightly loose so maybe this could be issue? I have no idea. I'm thinking I might buy some swanky new 300B's, I'm also thinking on changing the binding posts on the power amp to some lovely new copper jobbies. I'm not sure wether to go CMC or Cardas. I do like a good Cardas binding post . I have also noticed that System 3 was a little over damped so all the sorbothane and bamboo footers have gone and with this I notice an improvement in vitality and propulsion of the musical presentation, things sound more detailed and less laboured. So, I guess that's lesson learned and don't do that again.
