Nice job with the Takets Andrew. That's exactly what I did with mine. Bought a couple of wooden boxes from The Works and mounted them into that. Unfortunately they didn't work for me and I sold them on. I might give them a go again in the future. The racks, and your two systems, look fab. I wouldn't mind having a go at building something like that. Where did you buy the rod mate. What size is it? You have two very nice systems there mate. Hi Brian, hope your ok and thanks for the nice comments.
The thread, nuts and washers are all 20mm. The bamboo boards are 19mm thick. The rod was bought from a local shop just up the road from my house, it was one of those weird internet searches when you realise the shop is literally just 5 minutes away.
I honestly don't think I'll need another rack again as the design works really well for damping and levelling of components.
Thanks Andrew, I'll have a look. I'm pretty sure I've dealt with Kayfast before on Ebay. I would probably need two side by side, but I don't really see that as a problem.

What's this two updates in a week, can you tell I'm bored?
The Garrard 301....
This project is still rolling on! I've tried the Audio Silente (AS) idler wheel and it's ok but it is noisy compared to my old Garrard wheel. The new AS wheel is probably the best of the new wheels which are produced as new parts but it just gel in my 301 system. The AS wheel whilst very quiet was actually quite noisy whilst sitting in the 301, my 301 is silent, probably the quietest idler I've ever owned or heard, I'm blessed. I was hoping to have a silent idler wheel and then appraise my finding with a large selection of music, it just didn't happen. I've owned this deck now for over 10 years and I can very very quickly discern changes in it's performance and something just didn't sound right despite having the new AS wheel in for several weeks and continued usage. The soundstage and detail through my Tannoys was not as expected. I'm not knocking the AS idler wheel, it's fantastic fit and finish, a really nice well put together piece of kit, just sadly not for me. So, the old idler wheel has gone back in and piece/sanity has been restored. The AS wheel has been put back in my 401, it will be interesting to assess old the 401 idler wheel with the AS wheel and see if things can work out second time around.
It's not all bad news. The new bamboo rack is working really well and allows for improvements when using the 301. Firstly the 301 now sits level! Well, to be honest it's always sat level but now the 301 sits level in all planes when checked with a bubble spirit level, yes not the most accurate way of doing things but better than before. The bamboo has had a positive effect on damping the 301 alongside the Seismic platform which it sits on. Overall it has been a very worthwhile project. I've been paying careful attention to try and lessen vibrational load into the 301 through the rack from other equipment. My power amp, especially, makes a lot of vibration, experiments with sorbothane under the transformers and bamboo chopping blocks with given a better degree of damping. My pre-amp has had additional similagt treatment. I presume this helps the 301, the soundstage appears more detailed and more coherent so for the time being I'll leave these in place.
The quest continues....

Musings in Mono.....
My MONO quest contiunes and I've been messing around with speakers, cartridges and tonearm setup's. I'll be posting some pictures tonight with regards my current experimentation.

MONO Musings. I've decided to start a sub-thread in my main blog called MONO Musings which will detail my experiments and adventures in MONO. So, the first thing I've noticed is that MONO is not going to replace Stereo in my system! Second thing I notice is that MONO can sound amazing but you have to have well recorded stuff and it's essential that you have as a very minimum a record cleaner, ideally, a ultrasonic cleaner as some of these discs are approaching 60-70 years old and they need to be spotless to get the best from them. I've been blessed in that I have been given several Stones and Beatles MONO pressings and I've managed to pick up quite a few DECCA mono pressings, my collection extends to about 120 records. The record companies are now beginning to pick up on the fac that people want to play MONO recordings again. Certainly, Blue Note has started repressing recordings on it's popular Tone Poet series. I have two oof these recordings and they do indeed sound excellent. My MONO journey started with an old Shure M55E + mono stylus, ok not true MONO but it gave me a very basic idea of who things could sound. This little setup spurred me on and I found a cheap Ortofon MONO SPU for sale which I still own and use as the mood takes me. Experimentation has always been listening to MONO over two speakers through a four box PARADISE phonostage but the Ortofon SPU hummed like a bugger until I bought a cheap "Y" splitter for £8 from Amazon. I'll absolutely positive that this can be improved upon but I'm happy with things at the moment. So, no hum and a massive improvement on ths sonics. I decided to next experiment with speakers, the two I own and thought most likely to be up for the job happened to be Quad ESL 57 and a single Tannoy Monitor gold 15" in a big 300+ litre cabinet. I'm presently experimenting with the Tannoy to assess it's sonic characteristics. I've had the '57 in the system and it sounded very good indeed, famous for it's midband and ability to transcribe classical, it sounded amazing but a little tiring and in some instances shrill. The '57 did indeed sound amazing with female jazz vocals, originally designed for MONO reproducting, the jury is still out on the '57. I own a pair so I suppose I have a little flexibility on listening to something different should the mood take.
The above picture shows the '57 in the system. I'd been experimenting with speaker height, the OTA speaker stand not quite high enough and the pair of stands I'd built for my Celestion Ditton 15's proved a little too high, so it looks like I'll have to bodge something together in the garage which is some thing in the middle. I'd been listening to the '57 with no-name speaker cable and solid copper plugs, it really did sound excellent. Currently I've plugged my Tannoy into the system and this has the usual SPC speaker cable.
The difference is marked, but more on that later! Now for the star and surprise of the show! The Miyajima ZERO cartridge.
This is a £2K dream combo, borrowed from Hugo! It's an amazing cartridge. I've yet to compare against my Ortofon MONO SPU and then I intend to play around with the ZERO in my croft MM phonostage and Ortofon ST80SE SUT, I have the cart for another week so I'll be playing a lot of stuff.
That's it for now, stay tuned..

Looks like you're having fun playing around and trying things Andy Yep! Just stuff that I already own but nice to see which combo's work best. More exotic MONO carts exist like the Infinity ammonite-audio.co.uk/product/miyajima-infinity-mono-cartridge/ but I'm afraid no MONO recordings are worth £2.9K, I'd have one but it would have to be second hand.

Yep. I think even more expensive exotic monsters exist but I'll just stay with what I have at the moment.

Brian, you can bootstrap an old shure cartridge into mono for the cost of a small piece of copper. Old Shure carts can be picked up for less than £20, you might need a new stylus, which again is pretty cheap, just in case you want to try.

Inspired by Jimbo (on several forums) I decided to have a mess around with room treatment. Initially, just playing around with removing/adding stuff from the listening room and then with some DIY room treatment (Rx). Don't get me wrong, I'm already very happy with what I own and with what I hear and sure things can always be better but usually at a cost and at this stage in my Audiophool journey. I'm long in the tooth and have tried just about every fad known to audiokind. Room Rx is something I've never really bothered with because I quite a lazy sod but also extremely busy with very very time on my hands. Anyway, I bit the bullet and tried a few things. So, firstly a couple of homemade absorption panels from some clothing rails and 4 towels.
Speaker position has also beem tweaked by moving them back a couple of inches, as can be seen by the tape on the floor. My chair height position is now very good. My Tannoy speaker cone (central point), sits approx 91cm from the floor, my ear height position from my listening chair is approx 85cm, 6cm difference. Not ideal!! Yes, I'm a lazy sod. The listening chair needs to be raised, or maybe I might get a booster cushion!! I have also removed all my pictures containing glass from the listening room. So far things do indeed appear to have moved up yet another level. I'm still extremely sceptical. I just have this really big nagging doubt that it's just my system that's "on-song" tonight. I'm only going to be able to take this area of audiophillia so far as I'm restricted with space in the room but I'm hoping to at least to be able to tweak the room and get some improvements. I guess it's a case of watch this space.

Yep I had a, play at, this game a couple of years ago, I stapled a 9.5 Tog duvet to the picture rail behind my listening chair. It did something that wasn't detrimental so left it there even though it looked naff. Finally had to take it down when I had a friend to stay for a couple of days and needed it for him and have never got round to nailing it back up coz I'm also a lazy sod. Will definitely look at proper treatment when I finally move in a few years and setup my ideal listening room in a bungalow I will convert to a listening room with accommodation.

Room Treatment.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..... Things do indeed appear to sound better with a few thick towels propped up against my Tannoys. I have some spare wood in the garage, I'm going to try and make some DIY room treatment. I'll probably pop into town over the next few days to pick up some suitable material as a covering and then order some rock wool!

I'm taking delivery of some Rockwool RWA45 tomorrow. Who knew that Amazon had stock and better prices delivered than I could get from any DIY centre locally. In the next couple weeks I'll also be ordering some Camira fabric from GIK Acoustics which is what they use. gikacoustics.co.uk/product/camira-fabrics-by-the-metre/. You could even collect it if you prefer as it's only over in Bradford. It's wider than most other fabric sources and pretty good acoustically and fire rated, making it a decent value. You may have other preferences.

I've been busy today making some panels. So far this project has cost me nothing apart from time. Timber, fixing brackets, screws, and paint have all come from the garage. The timber started life as my old decking and was originally destined for any old DIY project that might crop up, and, well, here we are! So, using some old sand paper I sanded down the old 2x4 and removed any old rusty nails and generally gave them a clean up, I'm undecided to paint them or not as they will probably be covered by some nice material, probably from GIK accoustics. The steel brackets were salvaged from an old flat pack wardrobe that used to grace my bedroom. Screws came from a builder who left them on site at my house!
So, some old wood.
A short time later with the wood cleaned, cut to size and some brackets screws into place.
And finally, one frame made, another one to do tomorrow.
It's by no way perfect, quite rough and ready, maybe even rustic! It 4x3ft some covers 12ft2. These will stand at the side of the Tannoys. Damping is already helped by quite a thick carpet and a thick rug placed over the top. So, three surfaces taken care, I'll start looking at work behind the speakers and then the ceiling, it's going to be tricky coming up with something to sit behind my listening chair as all my records live in that space. I guess it's just a case of working with what we have. Upwards and onwards.

One of the biggest and cheapest upgrades I did to my system was put acoustic treatment in.
It is rudimentary, but it's bloody excellent.
Well done for taking this step, Andrew. It will pay off.

Not really an update, some musings. I've been downsizing and it's been quite a relief to get rid of some stuff. I've sold a Integrated Amp, A DAC + power supply, some TT accesories. OK not much so far but I have a few less boxes and the bank balance has gone up a smidge. The sales have been prompted by the thought that at some point I might move house and do I really need to be carting this stuff around, especially as I'm not using it. Secondly I've been looking at not spending as much money on the hi-fi system this year altough this will be blown nearer to my birthday when it's more than likely I'll be recieving a new pair of KT120 based monoblocks, but more of that nearer to the time. Air-Bourne vibration getting into my TT is the subject that I've been working on. So, far I've made a couple of absorption panels which have worked quite well and improved the soundstage. I've also managed to find some sorbothane sitting in a box collecting dust, so, as a wee experiment I've decided to plonk it under my pre and power amp. The Pre-and Power are probably the things which are going to introduce the most vibration into my equipment rack and into the TT. I've already rebuilt my equipment rack using single rods of threaded bar and 19mm bamboo shelves and, yes, this worked nicely. The pre and power amps sit on bamboo isolation platforms which have been damped further with sheets of Dyanmat from an old TT restoration. The isolation platforms also sit on Sorbothane. Tonight I added further sorbothane under both the pre and power amp. Multiple layers of damping to try and stop vibrations getting into the TT. The TT (A Garrard 301) sit's on a Townhsend Seismic sink. I think the TT is pretty well protected but I can try additional things such as :- 1. Permali plinth for the TT. 2. Imnprove room treatment to stop those pesky reflections. 3. I might manufacture some Permali washers to replace the steel ones currently being used on my equipment rack. 4. Better isolate the 301's external PSU, it currently sits on the floor, probably introducing vibrations into the floor and into my rack. 5. Replace my power amp. Yes this seems extreme, but it's probably going to happen. I'll have two monoblocks which will sit externally from the equipment rack and will need to be isolated from the floor. The good news is that they should produce less Tx vibration than my current workhorse.
So, some musings. I have no idea if any of this will help, but then that's the fun of experimentation.

Good post Andrew. Over the years I've experimented with supports etc. and I pretty much know what I like under my gear. I'm not keen on glass or granite, or anything hard. TBH I'm not keen on bamboo either. just natural wood. I've read posts over the years with interest documenting your efforts to minimise vibration in turntables particularly. I did try a few of your ideas with decent results. However, my box count has been reduced due to a a trip abroad to visit a loved one at the end of the year. Hifi has fallen significantly down my list of priorities. Hearing loss hasn't helped either. I have been looking at room treatment recently and am in the process of building some simple panels to test the concept in my room. I'm afraid no new gear here for the foreseeable, but I hope you enjoy the monoblocks when they arrive mate.

Bamboo just seems to work for me. I agree granite/glass are not to my liking. I'm beginning to believe room treatment is the way forwards, I still have to experiment and I'll post when I've got something useful to say!

More blogs updates.
It's snowing. Time to sit down with a coffee and detail the next stage of developments.
The great sell off continues. So far I've sold
x1 Gold G99 turntable x1 Bushmaster SEG DAC & extras. x1 Zerostat gun x1 SPH platter mat.
I'll be selling off a Magnum Dynalab FT101, maybe some more decks, and whatever else is going spare in the loft. I'm sad to be seeing this stuff go but I just don't use it. I am however doing my bit for keeping the local post office open, cardboard recycling, and spreading joy to other Audiobuffs who enjoy this sort of stuff, so I do feel a little better. I currently have three systems setup in the listening room which is great but a little unworkable. I think I'll be packing up my Heybrook TT2 turntable and moving REAL SOUND duties over to my Garrard 401/SME V-12 combo, may be fitting the Shure SC35C + JICO SAS/B stylus on cartridge duties. Amplification will still be the 300B bought from Chris, I'm undecided about phonostage either my the Croft MM phonostage on the Croft Pre-amp or my 834 Clone. I shall have more space which is always a bonus.
The room treatment experiment continues and is actually quite fun as I've been trying to do this as cheaply as possible, in true Yorkshire fashion. I remember pricing up some "Accoustuc Material" to cover the frames at £12 per SqM so that's nearly £50 with VAT and postage. A quick trip to the local poundstretcher and I found a couple of very thin cotton sheets for <£17. Enough material to cover both large frames and probably enough for a couple of smaller panels should I decided to make more. Weirdly enough I did manage to find x2 staple guns in a office cellar, one completely rusted and another is working condition (after a decent clean). So, hopefully another £10-20 saved here. I now need staples, I think I've found the right ones at £3 for 1000. I did try and find the correct size staples in several offices, again, trying desperately to keep in tradition with being a complete tight arse and not spending any more money than needed. So far this experiment has cost me approx £20. Foam is the next thing and here is where we hit a snag. Lots of different foams exist and meaning picking the right one might be tricky, so, I suppose, you takes a punt and hope for the best. I do take exception to minimum orders! Several companies expect you to order a minimum amount of foam, well bugger that, I've found a supplier that's more than happy to supply a custom order.
I'm still planning equipment upgrades and I've identified three areas where money may be deployed. The most likely suspect is amplification in the form of a couple of monoblocks, secondly a upgrade to my belowved Silver Meister II SPU, and then maybe something further up the SAEC speaker cable upgrade path.
The blog continues, stay tuned....

Friday night and it's a JAW night (Jazz and Whisky). So, the weather is glum up here in Wakefield, time for some more musings on the system. My main system over winter is the Valve system and TBH this is the one which gets the most attention. It's a bit like running a classic car, mainly because when it's working, it's amazing, but when it's not working it can be extremely frustrating. Presently, things have never sounded better, but I think this is because of tweaks with various bit and bobs. Firstly I raised the height of my listening chair by a further 5mm and boy did this make a difference. So, first top tip, make sure your lug 'oles are at the correct height to the tweeters. My second tweak actually cost me £170 for a 3M length of SAEC 850 Tripple C speaker cable. The speaker cable was purchased to further the distance of the speaker away from the Garrard 301 and to give the speakers a little extra breathing room, and again, thanks to messing around with furniture placement we have a nicer wider soundstage which feels and sounds wider and deeper. The absorption panels now sit a little further away from the Tannoys and I think this is having a nice positive effect. Finally I've been looking a VTA and tonearm alignment with the 3012, my Silver Meister II SPU is still sounding excellent but I'm mindful of it's age and I've messed around with the tonearm to raise the back up a little and things sound so much better, so a sad confirmation that it's nearing the end of the line, this little tweak will probably gain me another 100-200 hours of usage and then it's off for a radical rebuild.
I'm experimenting with trying to control external vibrations getting into the 301 and to some extent this is why it's like running a classic car, you know it's woefully out of date, but for me, I'm always wondering if we can drag a little more performance out of the old technology. The great equipment sale continues and this time it's been old power leads and IC's that I no longer need. I'm still digging around and have found more IC's, some valves, and a couple more TT's to sell. So far sales from my garage (or sometimes known as Aladdins Cave) have netted nearly 10% of the funds needed for my dream monoblocks. Small fry really but everything helps I suppose. The monoblocks take up some real floor space so I will have to re-jig the listening room again, but that's a problem for another day. The experimentation with room treatment continues, I keep looking at my window and seeing it's just one massive reflective surface with a very thin blind doing bugger all to calm things down. I might have to experiment with something behind the big Tannoys to see if things can be further improved. I'm sure the central soundstage could be improved further. I'll have to see what scrap I can find in the garage.....

It makes a difference. Top work, Andrew.
