I flew back into Gatwick today and saw from above the huge number of fields in Surrey that were flooded all around. Quite a sight and it's not the worst hit in the country for it from the sounds of it. Best of luck to all those folk affected, engine ! They should scrap HS2 and spend the money on much needed flood defenses across the country I reckon.

We are less than 1/4 mile away from the river calder. It flooded a pub at the end of our road but we escaped. We were ok but scary stuff. It's the first time I've seen the river do that in 15 years of living on my street.

We live in a valley with a stream at the bottom which has swollen significantly over the past 24 hours. Our house is on the hillside with a row beneath us nearest the stream so the water would have to rise above their roofs before we got hit. Mind you, if the rain loosens the soil uphill then 3 rows of houses would crash down onto us from a landslide. Doesn't bear thinking about.
