Saw a photo of yours Oli the other day, you moved rooms?

Hi Gary,
Welcome to AA.
What are your thoughts on the Topping DAC you have?

Hi Gary, Welcome to AA. What are your thoughts on the Topping DAC you have? Thanks, I’m very impressed with this DAC, it started off being close to my Jolida (modified) and with Siemens valves. The Linear Supply gives a further improvement, I’m not sure in a blind test that I could separate them. The D30 had been round a few people before I bought it from Firebottle, so was well used (run in if you believe that this happens to electronics.). Gary

Just make sure that if you ever buy one new, you actually receive a Topping product! There's some cloned very close looking equivalents to the D10 for instance that look almost the same inside and out apart from the maker's logo, but don't perform as well....
To the OP - take huge care of the Puccini amp you have as I reckon it's worth preserving. The output stage is extremely fragile and all it takes is one stray strand briefly across the terminals - I speak from first hand experience here - cough.......

I bought the Puccini amp about 2 years ago (time flies possibly more) as faulty from eBay with the hope that a magician (Firebottle) could wave his wand over it. Hey presto he found some faults, fixed and modified it, been running continually since. A heads up on frailties is always welcome. Gary

The output stage is extremely fragile and all it takes is one stray strand briefly across the terminals - I speak from first hand experience here - cough....... The driver stage was the worst part of the Puccini design, they were dissipating 450mW in 300mW rated transistors !!!! Doubling up the driver transistors with appropriate current sharing resistors solved that unforgivable problem.

I have to ask, if only hypothetically. Why do design engineers do this? I mean, using drivers that risk being 50% overworked - transistors like this are very very cheap I think, so what gives here?
Maybe they preferred to sacrifice the drivers instead of the output transistors, but I have no idea otherwise.
