Hello. I have been into Hi FI since I was a kid. My cousins ran a Dub Sound system so I grew up with huge DIY power amps and DIY bass bins the size of wardrobes. This early introduction to big phat base coloured the rest of my life. I became a Club DJ, a career I pursued for over 30 years.
My system is mostly DIY.
Sources Pioneer PDS-701 stable platter CD Player, heavily modified with DHT valve output stage, valve power stage, lots of vintage PIO caps and output transformers.
Rasp Pi with Katana DAC and Isolator fed by a DIY Vortexbox, Logitech Media Server ripper/streamer.
2x Technics SL1200 MK2, purchased in 1983, back then they had to be ordered from Japan via National Panasonic. Both are still going strong one has a few mods (mostly DIY). Michell Focus One, just because I think it look super stylish.
Pre Amps DCB1 (built by Bigman80 of this forum).
Stereo Coffee LDR pre Power Amp MyRef Freeman Edition.
Speakers Proac Response 2.5 clones
I look forward to joining in with the conversations here and continuing my Hi Fi journey.

I have been enjoying the LDR on and off for a few years, it seems to have an immediacy and a connection to the music that most pre amps I have tried tend to gloss over. Due to rubbish soldering on my part (I burned out some of the LDRs) the Stereo Coffee LDR has become a one input only pre amp, so very inconvenient. I did find with the LDR in place a slight rolling off of high frequencies, I assumed this was due to an impedance mismatch, which is why I investigated B1 buffers in the first place. I have only had the DCB1 for a brief time and am only a few albums in but so far so good. I am missing nothing at the frequency extremes and the mid range seems as fluid and incite-full as I have ever heard in my system. Once I have got a handle on the sound (or lack of) the DCB1 I will do some Direct comparisons With the LDR. I would still very much like to hear a B1 or DCB1 with an LDR as the volume pot.

That's an interesting idea but I think in time you will reach the same conclusion I did when you compare them to each other. It'll be interesting either way.

Which LDR pre amps have you tried Bigman80? I originally built a lightspeed from a kit which I thought was pretty good but only had one input. When I built the Stereo Coffee it blew the lightspeed away in every regard (I guess some magic added by Chris's control board circuitry). I had a Promitheus TVC preamp at the same time, the TVC was not as neutral or as transparent as the Stereo Coffee. I also had an Angle Audio MM phono stage with a line level input that had an LDR pre built in, this unit I felt was the least transparent of all and lacked dynamics.

I tried two different Stereo Coffee LDR preamps that Firebottle made for people. Had them here for a few hour each. I felt they were ok for the money but the DCB1 Turbo I had at the time just seemed to portray things in a more natural way. The LDR was really good for the £200, and there was quite a disparity in cost between it and the DCB1. I did recommend it to folks on a budget but it seemed to not sit well with the creater that I felt the DCB1 was better, subjectively speaking ofc. .
