So, let's rewind to maybe 2 years ago, when Alan and I were developing the BB phonostage.
I raided ebay for 2x Telefunken NOS ECC83 valves and 2X Telefunken NOS PCC88 valves.
All original from a bona-fide valve seller.
Total cost: £165
Looking on ebay today, and elsewhere on the net, the same combination is nearer £500!!
I was stunned.
Only a few weeks back, when I sold my BB to Mikeyb, I checked the prices and it was around £250 for 1x ECC83 AND 2X PCC88's
I should never have sold them lol
Is there a more profitable area of HiFi, than In The valves sector?

All I'm going to say is ouch! S. Yup. I've had to try other valves because that was just too rich for me.

One of my regularly used amps is a WAD Kel84 - 2 pairs of matched Russian EL84's (6P14P) cost £35 inc delivery from Latvia !
Needless to say i have a few spare sets to see my life out.

I’ve still to hear an EL84 amp. Lots of love out there for them. I’ve never really liked the EL34 in any of the applications it’s been used in. It’s a bit “average” sounding to me.

I love 6s7l's and variants. Prices are steadily increasing but bargains can still be had. I dropped on very lucky a while back and managed to snag 20-30 Mullard ECC83's for pennies now they go for silly money.

I've had loads of differing Mullard ECC83's and to be honest I usually always end up going for the military specification valves. I currently run a trio of Mullard 8137's in my EAR 834P clone. The Telefunkens are crazy prices now. I managed to be buy a trio before prices went silly. As crazy as it sounds it's probably more cost effective having a valve amp modded to take some of the more esoteric military valve types as these tend to be ignored. I had this done with my Croft Preamp, I run RCA red base 5691's probably the best 6SL7 valve you'll hear. You also get the added bonus of the amp being able to run a wider variety of valves which means more tweaking and fun!

As a massive mouthpiece for Telefunken valves, I now find myself priced out of them lol.
