What are the HD700 like Jerry? Always fancied Sennheiser HD800 reading reviews they sound remarkable open but maybe tad analytical? They get very mixed reviews - the professional reviews are pretty much universally positive, the user reviews veer from rave to pure vitriol. I'm baffled by the negative reviews, the HD700 are remarkably pure and open to my ears. The more I listen to them, the more I appreciate what they do. It was after reading the pro reviews that I decided to go for the 700 rather than the 800. I just got the feeling that the latter would be fatiguing in the longer term. The 700 might be criticised for being a bit polite, but that's fine with me, I find a lot of high end cans achieve their resolution partly by over egging the treble. It gives me a headache after a while. But yes, the 700 are clearly a league up on the likes of the Philips X2 in some ways. Purity, clarity, neutrality, naturalness. Less boogy, less fun in a way - but more accurate imo. I got mine for £300 used, I think they are worth it. Definitely medium term keepers.

VERY few things are long term keepers for me. MBL speakers, that's it.

After nearly 3 months enjoying my KT120-ed PrimaLuna Prologue 5 power amp I was feeling like a change, so it's back to the APart Champ 2 power amps, 2 of them bridged because, well, why not? 350 Watts each when bridged. Class G solid state. I think class G is some kind of minor variant of class A/B. Interesting comparison with the valve amp. Not hugely different - a little less soundstage depth with the AParts, a little more low level rez, rather better lateral focus. Just a touch of zing to the treble when the, admittedly extreme, outer dynamic limits are explored. You can get quite a lot of shove out of the MBL speakers with 350 watts. This will do nicely for a while, then maybe on to my Breeze Audio TPA3116 class D amp.

Time for a family group photo. In no particular order ; Beyerdynamic T90, B&O H6, Stax SR3, Sony MDR CD1700, PSB M4U, Sennheiser HD700, Philips Fidelio X2. I love them all. ... and my Epiphany headphone amp, Sonneteer Headspace crossfeed widget, and nifty little amp dongle thing for turning my phone into a rather fine headphone source.

Quite a collection there Jerry, how do you decide which one to use?

Quite a collection there Jerry, how do you decide which one to use? They tend to be scattered - - there's a headphone listening post with my main hifi rig that has the Beyer T90 and PSB M4U powered by the Epiphany amp - in the conservatory are the Senn 700, Stax SR3 and Sony CD1700 driven by an Onkyo CD receiver whose power amp drives the Stax 'stats - and in the bedroom Philips X2 and another pair of PSB M4U driven by a Lepy LP-A1 amp - the B&O H6 are lightest and also most efficient [i.e. loudest], so they get used in the garden with my phone. So, to an extent, choice of cans is constrained by location.

Any plans on a new dac Jerry or shouldn't I ask. Congrats on the sale of your Audiobyte by the way.

The new DAC (and preamp) is already sorted - I've been living with a Lexicon DC-1 for the last few months and still loving it. Ancient digital tech, but it sounds a lot like real music to me. www.soundstagenetwork.com/greg07.htm... "and anyone who thinks otherwise probably thinks there's still real life left in vinyl, too."

... "and anyone who thinks otherwise probably thinks there's still real life left in vinyl, too." Jerry when this lockdown is finally over you are invited to come around and listen to the vinyl setup. I am now at the position of stunning performance and won't be looking any further, it is mesmerising.

Thanks, Alan - I look forward to that! Sadly, my vinyl collection is gone, it would be interesting to hear familiar material on your setup.
It's OK, I don't actually doubt that vinyl can sound great. I just thought it amusing to see the reviewer's take on vinyl's future way back in 1997.

1997 -everywhere had stopped stocking vinyl by then. Some new releases didn't even have a vinyl issue. That was the year I bought my first CD player. I was not happy about being forced to use a medium I considered inferior!

Well, I've got 4 Lexicon digital processors (2 systems, 2 spares ), and a Chord 2Qute DAC with Teddy Pardo PSU (currently resting). And have only just now sold the Audiobyte DAC, as you know. Might also sell the Chord/TP, but I think I'll keep it hanging on just in case I go off the Lexicon approach.

I was a bit concerned you might run out of dac's, didn't know, or forgotten about, your Chord.

New toy. A Bantam Stealth class D 25wpc power amp from Temple Audio - proudly made in the NW of England. Input and ouput sockets on opposite sides is a bit of a pain. I've put a linear PSU on it rather than the SMPS it came with, and that nicely cleared up a bit of 'edge' to the treble, and generally helped the 3D-ness of it as well. I do love some of the lowish power class D amps. Just so transparent, tonally rich, dynamically nuanced and fast as F#ck! .... higher powered class D amps I have tried tend to lose the hi-rez subtlety that I enjoy so much. This just edged out a TPA3116 chip amp I had been using, The Stealth will do nicely for a while - a bit of an amp clearout is in the offing, I think!

Nice one Jerry, there's a real bargain LPS on pfm at the moment, 24V/3A. I was tempted to buy it and use with my TPA3116.

Nice one Jerry, there's a real bargain LPS on pfm at the moment, 24V/3A. I was tempted to buy it and use with my TPA3116. Ah, interesting about the LPS. But even now it's £130. I get my LPSs from china for about £50-60! I wonder if the one on PFM is any better? -- higher current capability, I guess. But mine seem to work fine.

Do you think the one on pfm would be ok, it does say 12v - 24v so assume it would. Don't know why I'm looking really, the amp was purchased cos it was cheap, £20, and now I'm thinking about spending £130 just for an LPS.

Dust is a real bloody nuisance. I cleaned mine up when I got the Lenco tt, swapped a couple of components around yesterday, unbelievable amount of dust again in on 10 days.
