I’ve done my fair share of this. I lost count of the number of speakers I have bought just to reform. No money in doing it, so just for the love of the speakers. Quite a few JPWs and Gales are back in use as a result.
I’ve also bought a lot of bits because I’ve seen them in a sorry state and knew I could sort them. Original Arcam Alpha and Delta range are often abused, but the tops, sids and knobs are all Matt black and the items can look like new with just an hour or two’s work and a bit of primer and black spray paint. I just bought an Arcam Alpha 3 amp which had a badly marked top and sides, plus knobs that had been restarted in gold and copper! A total mess, but it will be like new very soon.
I’ve also restored NVA cubes and a pair of Dynamo A25x too. It’s always satisfying and it’s something I miss doing when overseas.
I know Dave tinkers with stuff and I’d really like to hear more about anyone’s adventures.

I sometimes visualise you running a nice secondhand hi-fi shop. You never know Andrew, it could happen someday. You also have retail experience.

I tecently discussed such a future possibility with a mate. Trouble is I would need to commit to being in the UK and that ship may have sailed, I’ve lived away too long to be able to readjust, I think. I really do love the gear though, so you never say never. NEAT hifi was a big influence on me and there is a real place for another such shop.
