This is a biggie for me. I have more than a hunch that it’s responsible for many disagreements over the sound of things, especially speakers.
I have tended to sit 13-14 feet away from the hifi over the last few years. Things I revisited sounded markedly different to when I was 8 feet away, near-field let’s you hear lots but of detail but it also makes kit sound brighter and more sibilant if the kit leans that way. Soundstaging doesn’t work in the same way when near field either. You can’t assume speaker size will dictate listening distance either. Kans only work for me when close, but IBls, Royds amd Neat Petites are far better at a distance. Just my opinion, of course.
I wonder how this plays out with semi and full omnis. Instinct tells me they need distance, but the Cubettes are pret to good close up.
Has anyone else tried the same kit on different surroundings? Did you hear big differences?

I guess Dr. Evil should be able to help you out here.

I think the room must play a big part in how close your listening position is. I am quite happy approx. 7'-8' from my Cube 3's, but would not want to be that close to my brothers Estelon's, you would take away the openness and soundstage these speakers can produce.

I agree 100%. One thing about small cubes is that you also, get image height in the near field.

I like (good) headphones, listen close to speakers (under three metres) and when I attended live gigs, stood fairly close and that's just fine for me...

I hate headphones, like to listen a good 15-20 feet from the speakers, and always stand back near the sound desk at gigs. So pretty much the opposite from you, Dave.

I'm fine with near-field, distant-field and headphone listening. I used headphones for most of my listening when our children were small, and still use them late at night; I listen near-field (4 feet or so from speakers) in one system, and distant-field (about 12 feet from speakers) in my other system. All allow me to enjoy the music. I guess I'm either easily pleased, or have very low standards.
