Well, they are a pig to solder. I had to break out the 75W gas powered iron to get enough heat into them to get the solder to “take”. Anyway, job is now done.

My RME ADI-2 DAC FS has arrived today. It’s about the same size as my Caiman SEG, so fits in the rack nicely. That is where the similarities stop.
It sounds very good, and has a bewildering menu system with all sorts of things you can change. For now, Imwill just play some tunes through it, and marvel at the increased sound stage.
I’m going to have to make a better cable up for this one.

So the Dorado is not man enough to keep this DAC powered up. I wonder if my Linear PSU is up to the job.

I have a V1 RME, but that was to be expected for the price I paid for it. I am going to spend some time with it, and see what Inthink of the headphone amp.

I don’t think I could tell the difference between a V1 and a V2.

This sounds very good. Certainly a step closer to the vinyl playback now.

The things that the RME does better is just about everything. This DAC is on a different level sound quality and price wise.
It has more detail, without being in your face. It has a wider sound stage. Tonally it is very pleasing, without being too warm.

The RME has pretty much been the weapon of choice for those who want a good DAC, without buying from China.

Just need to work out how to sell my updated SEG without a UK buyer getting stung for VAT.
I think I will advertise it on AoS and see if anybody bites. It will be going wiyth a Mk1 Dorado.
At the weekend, I am going to have a play with headphones. My Solo Ultra Linear may no longer be required, but it woukd restrict me to headphone use on Digital only.

This DAC looks like a nice piece of kit Kevin . Does it have a remote ? Going over to the dark side ?

Yes. It has the enhanced remote, hence me initially thinking it was a V2.
I have always played on the dark side. Vinyl is for the serious listening sessions though. Digital is great for new discoveries.

So with the prospect of a third lockdown looming, my thoughts turn to my next project - my BB3 build. One thing I will need is a decent case. It is going to have to be a black one. I am looking for a one box solution, and a full size case would not put me off. That would allow me to keep the Traffo well away from the PCB.
The question is, what is the minimum height I need?

Acoustic Dimension are no longer listing the motorised 100k stereo SA on their website. What would be the next best thing?

I always use 80mm height, as that gives plenty of space.

Are ETI Bullet plugs any good? Yes. They are very good, but the new ones are mega expensive. AECO are very good too.

I have some silver AEcO on my Silver OCC cables. Looking at Copper for my copper OCC cable.

I robbed my Silver Harmony plugs off another set of cables. Job done.
I have been listening to headphones tonight, using the headphone amp in the RME DAC. It is pretty darn good, and I am toying with the idea of getting rid of my headphone amp now.

I know a lot of people are very complimentary about those TKD pots, but for my money I'd not stray from a stepped Attenuator. There must be an alternative to the acoustic dimensions Angus has made custom stepped Attenuators. In fact the one I use is one of them. I am wondering if a motor system could be fitted to one? I'll ask him if he has any ideas.
