Yesterday evening I switched on the Rega. Then about 2 minutes later it cut off, followed by a nasty aftermath of smoke. I quickly unplugged the Rega to avoid any risk of fire. It was ex-display bought last September, FFS!!
The experience was rather unpleasant and quite intimidating. Now just imagine what could happen, If I wasn't present in the room whilst the Rega was smoking, left powered on plugged into the mains!!
Without surprise the fuse (rear located) is shot. The glass on the fuse is black.
email sent to the dealer. I've also messaged Paul Darwin.
I'm feeling tempted to open the top and take pics.
What are your thoughts?

It's still under warranty, so get it back to Rega via the dealer to be sorted. It may even come back sounding better after too as the whole thing will be gone over.
Components can fail through no fault of your own or the manufacturer - it's life I'm afraid. Be patient and it'll be sorted to your advantage. Rega are good people and almost always take the customer/end user's side.

I guess anything and everything can fail. If it does, I'd be more confident in Rega to step up and make it right than I would many others. Manufacturers are often at the mercy of componnet manufacturers. Yes you can buy over specified bits from reputable suppliers, but every componnet will have some failures. It's most likey a single component costing pence has made your amp fail.

There was a planet on EBay for £165 if you fancied a stop gap that you can't really lose on. Or you could ask the dealer fir a loaner.

I don't know the XTZ, but the equivalent Emotiva is good I think.

I had a suspicion they shared a factory and maybe, basic design, but don't quote me on it.
In their early days at least, Primare and Copland shared a factory and I'm certain some basic DNA bled from one to the other to the benefit of both (probably my imagination and not all Copland amps sounded bland).

I only heard CSA14 and it really was bland. My mate had a 401 which he thought was pretty good though lovely lookers.

The XTZ CD100 is here. Build quality is well built. The appearance resembles the Marantz stuff. The Apollo-R looks like average joe in comparison.
Must have a listen, when I have time.

China Inc can do superb build for not much money as their labour rates seem far lower than ours. Component quality needs policing though.
To give you an idea on speakers - 'Tower' speakers with triple 5" bass, one 5" mid and tweeter between the bass and mid drivers for $98 (each or pair I'm not sure)!!! Another tower in more curvy cabinet with 8" side mounted driver, twin 5" mids with tweeter in between for $250 (again, pair pictured so assuming this is the price). Bought in bulk and add distributors, import duty and dealer margins, you can times these prices by ten at least! twenty years ago, when the £ was stronger, a pair of Quad 11L's (very popular at the time) came into the UK $14 landed, boxed and ready to ship out to dealers to retail for £320pr! I could go on but I think you get the point.
Rega make all the casework and innards locally I believe, except CD transports in the UK still and the transports are so basic I doubt they cost much each in fairness. Manufacturing costs are so much higher here and they've improved the Apollo R style wise since it first appeared. A pal had problems with one of his (he's owned several systems in a short time like you Shane), it went back to them for service and came back sounding better than ever!

I always struggle to trust Chinese built stuff, but then my ipads were all made there and none have been problematic. I guess Dave’s right about policing being important, nobody would want to piss of Apple too, so that probably helps keep them honest

Got my Apollo-R back yesterday and the thing is up and running. Rega replaced the transformer and of course installed new fuse.
Great little machine. Works fairly well with my Exposure 2010S2.

I’m glad it’s sorted. Sometimes having something back after an absence can really make you appreciate it.
