The music is very thick around the midrange and upper bass.

Have tried the neotech cables on the Khozmo which has made things tidier but the volume pot needs turning right up to get decent levels.
The neotech cables on the Tisbury are are a revelation what a fantastic little box.
The fact that there is such disparity between these two pre’s tells me there is something else about the Khozmo that the Quad doesn’t like because the Tisbury which has the same impedance as the Khozmo and not only sounds a lot better but has twice the amount of room on the dial.

Is the Khozmo a shunt attenuator?

Yes it is. Would this make a difference?

Yes the input and output impedance's vary depending on the volume setting, so may not suit the low input impedance of the Quad.

That’s good to know because the pre I’m having built isn’t a SA it’s a mechanical pot a Tkd 2cp2511. The thing that has really excited me is the improvement that the Neotech OCC cable gave to the Tisbury great advice from Alan.

Yes really pleased with how it looks lets hope it sounds as good with my Quad. I spoke to Anthony about the Khozmo and he fully agreed with Alan that the Shunt resistor wouldn't mix well with a low input amp like the Quad, I have very high hopes for the BTE as I'm listening to the Tisbury/Quad again tonight and it sounds really, really good
The really great thing about about BTE and Anthony is he will build you a pre to your budget and your needs and so far has proven first class thank you scotty38 for the heads up.

When I sold my DCB1 Turbo, it went to a guy already using a BTE. I think he preferred the BTE in the end, but i never found out his final decision

Back in the early nineties I had a pal who used a QED passive into a QUAD 303 - beautifully open and sweet sound. Still one of the most listenable systems I think I have ever heard for the outlay of just a few hundred quid.

Funny I had a QED passive running into a Quad 606 from 1990-2015, maybe thats why I did not change my system for 25 years!

A Bugle 2 DIY battery powered phono stage built by Stoyan at Audiopils arrived Friday but due to a broken Southern Water smart meter, leading to small overflowing water tank, leading to a meter square chunk of ceiling having to be cut out listening time has been at a premium and so I'm not sure if some run in time is needed but out of the box it hasn't offered any improvement over my Musical Fidelity V LPS/V PSU in fact the V LPS is a clear winner. Now the Musical Fidelity is no slouch and is the best sounding 'budget' phono stage I've owned and heard so that puts this DIY Bugle 2 into the very good for the money category rather than the giant killer I was hoping for but of course it may improve with time and it may not be at it's best in my system.
It's plus points so far are that it is dead quiet which is the battery psu I suppose, it's incredibly well built and the aforementioned batteries are much smaller than I thought and fit nicely into a case I already had. Sound wise at the moment it's a similar story to the Khozmo all though not as bad and that's a slight thickening of the midband but with greater detail but of course for me anyway I'll take less detail but cleare midrange.
If things don't improve and I also have the above linear psu to try my guess is it might be that it just isn't a fit with my present system the Quad with it's very low impedance is a bit of a pain to match with but luckily my current V LPS, BTE passive, Quad is a very easy listen.
Today two pairs of 1m MCRU No 44 cables arrived which cost me £75 for both and will replace the Klotz and the Chord Crimson so I'll connect them up maybe tomorrow and report back.

Sorry to hear about your over flowing water tanks - bummer. Let's hope a bit of running in improves the Bugle, but it look like it's up against it at the mo.

Thanks antonio but whatever the outcome it’s a great stage for the modest outlay and it could well end up over in Spain with a Planar 2/ Hancock 228 or Rega RB300., Breeze Audio TPA3116, JBL control 1 system.

I've been in contact with Stoyan builder of the Bugle phono stage and he has reiterated that it needs quite a few hours to get to it's best. I've yet to connect either a linear or switch mode psu to the phono stage and am waiting for a charger to be delivered for the batteries so it's on hold at the moment. My Planar 2 is coming early next week and I've been offered a very good deal on a Phonograph Systems Delrin platter and aluminium sub platter, a TTPSU and a Peek ceramic bearing which as soon a I've got the deck physically in my hands I'll agree to buy so I'll then just need a 24v motor to build a very credible deck for my holiday system.

Another little addition primarily for my other half as I prefer a hard wired solution is the BlitzWolf BW BR4 bluetooth receiver and transmitter £24 inc post from BangoodUK. This little box is very good at what it does with excellent range and connections it has a digital out so I have it connected to a dac so that my other half can play anything from her iPhone so Tidal, TuneIn, youtube etc into the main system. I've not tried it connected via analogue out straight into the preamp so cannot comment on that but used in the way I have it equals the Chromecast Audio for sound and betters it in every other way. I haven't used the transmitter side of things either but if anyone is looking for a cheap way to play music from a bluetooth device into a non bluetooth dac then this is an excellent solution.

Some new editions to my 'holiday' system because as good as the Breeze Audio TPA3116>>JBL Control system is and it's very good I've decided I want a bigger sound and also a record player when I'm away from home so I've bought a Naim Nait 5 and a pair of Dynaudio Audience 52's and after I've decided which deck to keep at home the other will go over to sunny Spain.
I'm thinking that the Rega/Nait/Dynaudio will make a great little holiday system not the most accurate in the world but good fun all the same and for a digital source I'll stick a Bluetooth receiver into the Nait and use my Fiio M9 DAP which has dual AK4490EN Dac chips and A3P030 FGPA chip which is supposedly capable of decoding up to DSD 128 though as long as it plays my Tidal streams well and also all of my CD rips stored on the SD card that's good enough for me.
