Here are some pictures of my set up on my own thread after posting on macca's by mistake. First is my record player a modded Technics SL1200 Mk2. It has an Ian Mac bearing and an Audio Origami Rega RB300 arm with an AT 150EA cart, as you can see the pitch slider and platter light have been removed and the PSU has been placed off board in a seperate box. All of this was done by a member on AoS who sold it to me a couple of months ago for an excellent price all I've done is added an Achromat and a Mitchell clamp. Cost about £400. IMG_1629 Next my Dynaudio Contour s3.4 I've had these about 3 years now which is the longest period of time I've used the same set in 20 years or more. Like most Dyns they are 4ohm and single wired (which is a bonus) they like plenty of power and sound fantastic. I gave a set of Dynaudio X32 and £500 for these. IMG_0507 Here's a picture of the rack a £20 eBay bargain. If you look on the second shelf you'll see a trio of Musical Fidelity V series components. A V LPS Phono Stage, a V DAC and a V PSU which powers both. Excellent value and all sound great all three cost less than £150. I'm using Chromecast Audio for streaming Tidal and iRadio via In Tune. IMG_1574 I'm using Klotz MC500 cables with MS Audio plugs on the Phono Stage, Chord Crimson on the DAC and an IsoKinetic Silver 8 mains on the PSU. Speaker cables are Naim Nac A5. IMG_1590

I live to see LPs that look let they get played ! 🙂🤘 How do you find the Achromat with the SL ? I thought it lightened the bass a little.

Did you “stick” the Achromat down with a little Vaseline, or simply drop it on the platter?

It's funny you ask that. I stuck it with double sided sellotape.

Mind you , a I've just started using a Mitchell clamp which I never thought of before so my opinion might change. I like reggae on the SL because of the bass being a little more emphasised than the gyrodec. I'm picking up that Musical Fidelity Phono stage like yours today. I'm hoping it doesn't beat my Sugden stage 2 for sound quality, but I will definitely be using it for heavy listening sessions as it switches from MM to MC . I use both decks just for convenience when it gets heavy going. 😀 Im using a leather mat on the SL at the moment but I'll try the Achromat with the clamp 'Tara stylee' and get back.

I tried the original rubber and an old Linn felt I had lying around and the Achromat is much better than those two. Cant say as I've noticed any difference in the bass but it has tightened everything up. I've had lots of those LP's a long time and they get played a lot in fact I'm going up in the loft to get another couple of boxes of records down as I'm limited to 9/10 box shelves in the living room so I swap them around.

Lovely looking set up you have I've always wanted to try a Gyrodec. Last year before I had a big clear out I was also going to go down the route of having two decks I had a pre Cirkus LP12 with a Fidelity Research FR12 arm that sounded fantastic with very expensive Jazz reissues but stick a JA press reggae LP or 12" and it sounded dull so I thought like you I'd get an SL1200 because when I was buying lots of reggae that's the deck I used and it always sounded great. Anyway I ended up with just the SL and am very happy.

How do you get it off afterwards ? Or do you just leave it on all the time ? And we must talk ' reggae' sometime.

I just leave it on I'm not sure it's made a massive difference though but at least it's easily cleaned and yes maybe we could even start a Reggae thread it's a great way of sharing music especially with todays streaming services although there are still some records not available on them.

My idea for the future is to try some valve gear, I had a Yaqin (see below ) about four years ago which was surprisingly good before a curiosity with Naim Audio took hold. I'm thinking I might try a valve pre into the power section of the Nad for starters but don't want too make an expensive mistake really cannot afford that at this moment (every pound seems to have somewhere to go before it even lands in my account) and obviously anything too cheap won't show off what valves can do. Whatever valve preamp you choose, try to ensure it has a good volume control. No Alps Blue or you are just losing out on what that kit could do.

System update, I've just placed a deposit on a used MCRU PSU for my Technics SL1200 a very kind fellow member over on AoS is prepared to wait a while for the rest. The stock PSU was removed by the previous owner and placed off board in a nice case so just a case of detaching the internal wires and connecting the small regulation stage any ideas on wether that is better placed inside or outside the deck?

IMG_1574 That rack is on a carpet. On wheels. I think you'll find that's against the law.

Rack on wheels? I bet it'll be fine The Techie 1200mk2> models had the power supply right below the platter on top of the deck-plate. This apparently could cause some hum with low output MC cartridges and I believe it's the main reason for getting the supply out of the deck itself. Not sure why they did this as the SL1500 here put both the transformer (shield plate added) and drive board under the cast deck plate,

New cable pull the whole rack out, new TT PSU pull the whole rack out it's just so easy and as I've never had it any other way other than on wheels so I've no idea if it sounds better or not on spikes. Perhaps when I'm finished tweaking and I'm happy then I may try spikes or I may not.

I have just put a deposit on a MCRU Long Dog Audio psu so when that arrives I'll just remove the internal wire and connect the new psu. I'll then just keep the old PSU as is in the box in case it ever comes in handy.

I’d like to try a valve pre into the power amp section of my Nad does anyone have an thoughts that might help. The best (subjective opinion) valve preamp I have heard is made by Firebottle. His KIN is a thoroughly transparent affair with minimal euphoric effect from the valves.
Would be expensive as its all p2p wiring and he does everything himself but it is a cracker.
If you are near the midlands, pay him a visit.

Thanks I actually had a firebottle phono stage which was very good for the money. Unfortunately am all the way down in Brighton so a bit far to pop in but will keep an eye out for a used one.

Where about s are you? Anywhere near me in Newcastle? No in fact I'm completely at the other end of the country down in Brighton. I'm leaning more toward a solid state pre now I think that perhaps matching a valve pre with the SS power amp section of the Nad might be difficult and maybe not the best way forward anyway. I'm hoping to find a pre that lets more of what's on the record through and takes a back seat but I'm a bit of a newbie to that type of system building and as always money is an issue so can't afford to just buy and try lot's of kit as I used to. It's not that I'm unhappy it's just I think the preamp section of the Nad is letting it down.

You might do worse than this for an SS pre-amp: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KingRex-PreFerence-pre-amplifier/264541120888?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649I had the previous single box version. It was excellent, really good sound quality and no nasties at all, very nicely made too (might try and buy it back from my mate actually).
