Nowadays I use budget friendly Hi-Fi that sound good to my ears.
The many years of experiencing diminishing returns. Has taught me a good lesson that some of the cheaper H-Fi can sound pretty darn good. I'm not saying all entry level stuff sounds great. You can of course, come across some dud ones.

You can spend ten grand on an amp and still end up with a dud (no names mentioned).

Quite often its as much about matching as it is about price. Price and quality are only loosely related anyway because what markup a maker charges can vary wildly

I come across blokes who spend ridiculous amounts of money on kit. If they have the money then good luck to them, If I had the dosh I would do the same of that there is no doubt. As I do not have the money I have a great time messing about with budget kit and with matching as Westie states, the results can be very very good. To be honest I have spent more money on kit than I ever have on a car or motorcycle, I am sure more than all the cars and bikes I have owned combined, how sad is that. Or anything else for that matter apart from my house.
Nothing wrong with budget kit, I do most of my listening on budget kit. In my opinion the law of diminishing returns sets in rather soon with kit. Easy to say if you do not have money to burn. I do not have money and I have no issue with that it is what it is. I have always spent within my means and am content with that. If I did have the money different story I would be spending sill money on kit. Whether the results are worth it sound wise would be totally irrelevant.
Why some people make negative statements about how others choose to spend their money is beyond me. Did that person take from you? Do their lifestyle choices offend you; then ask yourself why, because you have the problem not them, they do not give a Sh#t. What the hell difference does it make to you if they make purchasing choices that you do not approve off? Some forums out there are nothing but a place for blokes to brag about what they got and by association how much money they have to burn. Good luck to them if it was not for them I could have never put together a system costing 25% of the new cost.
The cost of what I paid for my main kit, by just being patient till the right things popped up at the right price, would certainly put it into the budget bracket. The other kit I listen to comes in well below budget.

I'm also a fan of buying the top tier kit when it comes up second hand at a good price. I'd rather do that than buy brand new budget kit.
These days you can get an excellent digital source and some competent speakers brand new for not a lot of money, it's amplifiers where the cost cutting can show up in the sound.
Having said that I have heard complete budget systems that were good. Went to a friend of a friends house where he had a full NAD system, all bottom rung stuff. he put some music on while we talked, I had trouble concentrating on the conversation as the sound was good enough to distract my attention.
Bit further up the pricing food chain I have had the same experience with an all-Rega system.
If someone is new to the hobby and doesn't have a clue it pains me to see them get - what I think - is bad advice. Because that was me once. But otherwise I've no issue with whatever people want to spend their cash on or what rabbit hole they want to go down.
