Replace like for like, stay away from anything 'audio'. I suspect Panasonic nh and nhg for small value and maybe fm and fc for the larger caps. No doubt nichicon will have some similar still available
Start off by finding the specs of what's in there already.

it would appear theres more to it than just changing like for like, ripple current values etc, where do you start with that?

No need to sweat it Jamie... any modern cap of same uF and Voltage (you can go as high as you like on Voltage and will likely find you need to go to a higher voltage rating anyway to get something of roughly the same physical size) that isn't designed as a miniature space saving variant will be better than the originals. Any decent brand will do. Choose 105C rated ones for longer life.

Yeh look for 105 degree wherever possible, they might not need that operating temp limit but they'll give longer lifespan at any temperature.

ive just ordered all the caps to replace the electrolytics, all bar 1 is the nichicon pw series. i will go on the side of caution and replace 1 at a time and check the tt's operation, that way if there's a problem i can narrow it down to the last cap change rather than 20 odd potential canidates lol

Doing a mk2 Xerxes supply right now with 105 degree caps and you can see the hot spots around the driver and output stages too, although the solder joints 'look' ok on the surface. The company don't do repairs on these and I'm told they want £500 for a replacement. Hope 'caps' is all it is as I'm beggared if it's deeper than that.

Just noticed - is that 35V 2200uF cap leaking or is it an adhesive that many manufacturers used? Jez? Anyone?

You can see a strip of it between the blue cap and the grey one to stop them buzzing against each other.

OK, thanks for pointing that out. Elna and Nichicon do look to be better quality brands, so maybe these caps are fine in that case. I have a 45 year old technics 1500 here and it's not the caps that have gone off, it's the speed pots (two coarse ones on the board and the two deck plate ones) and also the main switch (33-off-45) contacts playing havoc.

I bought a Technics SL1200 recently second hand and the previous owner had removed the psu to a seperate box but still connected to the deck. I'd like to first replace the mains cable which is
to thick and add sockets in and out of the psu box so that it isn't constantly attached. Then I'd like to investigate the possibilty of replacing/ upgrading caps etc. I'm reasonably confident with the
first bit as screw fit sockets are probably available but and this is a major sticking point for the second phase my soldering skills are ham fisted at best. Also obviously I'll need an iec input socket
for the mains but what male and female socket will be best for the record player side of things, a two pin?
