Cause if it was sold for what it is actually worth nobody would buy it. If it don't cost silly money it must be junk.

What does 'worth' mean though? Components only? Components plus labour? Components plus labour plus distribution? Components plus labour plus distribution plus retailer overheads? All of the above plus a profit margin?
If you're a DIYer making stuff for self and mates, possibly the first or second. If you're a manufacturer selling direct, the first and second plus the profit margin. For any other manufacturer, it's going to be all of them.

People tend to associate cost with quality. Now often this is indeed the case, but when you have a product which happens to sound bloody fantastic in spite of not costing much to make (and it does happen) then you can have trouble selling any unless you "add a nought" to the price, as it were... You try to offer customers the bargain of the century and they ain't interested 'cos they think "it can't be any good if its that cheap".
I remember a tale I was told by a hi fi dealer about 30 years ago... he had a phono stage he sold at only about £100 and he rated it as being as good as anything up to £500 but was finding that many potential customers would not even audition it as "it can't be any good at that price"... after several discussions with the manufacturer they made it into a MkII. The only actual change was a different case! They put the price up to about £350, getting a huge profit margin now!, and instead of say 1 a month the hi fi dealer was selling at least 1 a week now!
Caveat emptor...

It looks rather like a bought in B&O module to me.... but many do look very similar so "don't quote me on that"! There's certainly nothing much to explain the price and indeed you could buy a SMPS module of very similar technology and parts cost for about £20!
