Whilst I obviously completely disagree with all the foo being spouted above on speaker cables.... Here's an example for illustrative purposes of a possible scenario... and one I've seen!
Lets say you have a 100WPC amp with a damping factor of 1000 (very high but possible) and you connect it to a set of 4Ohm speakers using 5m runs of the thin single core DNM cable.... This cable at that length has a loop resistance of 1Ohm... and your speakers actually see a damping factor of 4. Yes 4. Also at 100W output, 20W is lost in heating up the speaker cable.

What I find more interesting than this conversation is the fact that EVERY musician I have ever worked with, spoken to and read about, quite often had little tips and tricks to change the sound of their instrument. Whether it be to cover the pickups on the guitar with spit or to using a different type of cable between guitar parts. Now, being a musician myself, although not in the same league as Dave Gilmore, what I find the most important is that he, and those I've spoken to and worked with have ALL heard the difference with tweaks. Yet those who make the equipment seem to be impervious to anything that cannot be measured So, who am I going to listen to a lbout sound? The guys making the music, trained to tune instruments by ear, trained to hear every little flat or sharp on a note that they practice for YEARS to perfect. Those who have listened to their instruments for 30 years, know how things SHOULD sound Or some bloke who learned how to amplify a signal at college. I know where I put my trust. Speaking as an EE who also plays half a dozen instruments it would 100% be the "bloke who learned how to amplify a signal at college" without a moments hesitation!

That's a valid point and for th ings like that, your education will be hugely beneficial but in terms of what you hear, you aren't as qualified as a musician of 30 odd years They hear things most people never will. It been ingrained in them for most of their life. How to listen for specific things. They are highly sensitive to differences in sound. It's not "foo" if you just can't hear it.

Yes they can. The Tone of a guitar etc.. Why a lot of Guitarists favour the sound of an original strat or a Gibson 'J200' Acoustic.. But that is the instruments not the recordings, they are down to the Producer/Engineer..
No different with me. I know how i want something to sound, its like implanted in your brain. I totally & utterly cannot get that sound from modern gear, I use what ever means i can to get it, Hi-Fi dudes can argue the toss & laugh all they want but at the end of the days its me that is listening to the sound. Im well know for doing things off the norm & being far from a Sheep..
Example: Say a Beatles Recording done at Abbey road & all the other recordings from that era.. I can clearly hear a sound signature that others cant seem to. Seems to be altered with purist gear..

Have I took it too far by being a musician for 45 years then?

I'm using 2.5mm Van Damme Blue Studio Speaker Cables. Length is 3.5m. Good enough for my needs.

The only benefit of PBJ is that cause slurper Russ puts his prices up so much I sold two lengths of 20 yr old PBJ recently for as much as I paid new. Since it is high impedance I can't see it being suitable for long runs in studios. Gilmore was using it many years ago but not aware if he still does.

Manufacturers give studios free equipment so they can say that such and such a studio uses our cables, or amps or whatever. Don't know if that is the case specifically with Gilmour and Kimber but could well be. It might be that no=one at the studio gives a rat's ass what cable they use but if it is free then why not?
Girls at work were discussing headphones just the other day and one says that AKG are the best headphones because that is what they use in the studios she has been in. So it does work as a marketing strategy.
Anyway it seem to me that an authentic vintage system does need to have authentic looking speaker cables, not something that you could moor a tugboat with.

I used to have a set of K240 MKII, made in Austria. Sounded decent. They had a nice balanced tone. No exaggerated nonsense.
