Hi,
This is my little Xmas project. I got a very good deal on this little deck. I'm experimenting with this and a very pimped TD160 super I own. This little deck will be "stock", no fancy after market gubbins. It's just a little experiment over Xmas to see how the various mods work on the more pimped examples of the TD160, and I get to have a little fun bringing this one back to life. I've included a good few pictires after being bollocked earlier for not including some pictures of previous projects.
Nothing really that exciting apart from the fact I've managed to get a TD150 mat instead of TD160. I think I have a spare kicking around somewhere. This deck came with no power cable so after a quick rummage I fitted something which looked half decent. I'm pleased to report back that this example which is No. 91744
does indeed spin. There is none of the dreaded Thornen's "Knock", it's slient apart from the belt changing on the speed selector. This is an easy fix with a pair of thin nosed pliers! The belt is supposed to be a Thakker replacement. I doubt very highly that it's a Thorens orginal but funnily enough platter speed measures bang on 33.3 rpm +/- 0.01 rpm so that's not too bad for a resto project bought off ebay.
All screws correct and appear to have been left well alone. The belt is catching the speed selector pulley. Otherwise, I'm happy that things have been left alone.
Year and years of crud around the plastic motor pulley. Probably the same belt left on for decades. This will needs a clean.
Inner platter looking bloody filthy. Will need a bloody good clean.
Compromised plinth integrity. Needs fixing. Where's my wood glue??
Wot no cartridge? I'll have some fun maybe fixing some old MM to this, maybe something I've never heard before.
Stay tuned...

Looks a little tired. Very interested in seeing it restored to it's former glory.

I've not had a look at the wiring yet and the tonearm selector is a little dodgy! More to come.

Thanks Andy. Don't post much on hifi on any forums these days. Must be happy with my system lol.
Yes, I always look forward to these threads. Must try and buy and restore another battered old turntable, although I don't have your obvious skill in this area, it does keep me occupied.

Managed to get a little time on the deck last night. Some work done on the inner platter and a little cosmetic cleaning on the top plate. Might squeeze some more time in later today.

Pt 2 - Platter polishing and general deep clean.
Tonight I started by cleaning the speed pulley selector. Here you can see years worth of rubber and dirt from 45+ years of spinning vinyl.
And now a quick clean and looking a lot better.
Next, the platter. The inner platter is flithy and really does need some TLC.
And now after a little TLC.
And now mounted on the deck.
The platter recieved some special attention. Firstly a clean with IPA alcohol to degrease the area and remove excess rubber and then many grades of wet and dry to fetch the platter surface down to a decent finish and then finally polished to a mirror finish. The spindle also got similar attention. Firstly it was inspected and I could find no pitting, I did degrease and de-oil the spindle, it recieved a very very light polish with 5000 wet and dry. Finally, ultrasonically cleaned, dried, and the polished again. A quick speed check revealed bang on 33.3 rpm. I also managed to wipe the top plate over with some IPA. Here's what 45+ years of grime look like.
Hopefully some more when I get time next week!
