Nice to.see a boron canti. Disappointed to see a Shibata profile. It always had the both. Will likely still be a bugger to set up, but sound fab once set up nailed. Would have been v interesting if they'd have stuck a Replicant on the end of it. Still would like to hear one and see some reviews re: any differences between the original.

The 2M Black has an aluminium tube cantilever.

Bit pricey but if it sounds amazing probably worth it. I wonder if you can by the stylus separately....

So that will be about £600 for the stylus?

It does doesnt it, the 2MB is quality, this one goes a bit further with it so should translate, even a little. If I didnt have my Cadenza Black - FGS to wear out (which has low hours on), I'd be very very tempted.

This would probably go up the top of the tree if I was looking.

At €749 I would expect something better.

What's wrong with Shibata's then ? I love em. 🤨 Good question, I was going ask Kevin to elaborate, which he might. I too love the Shibata, it is classed as one of the so called 'sophisticated' stylus profiles. I find they dig lots of detail, the Shibata is fairly smooth too. The downside, which experience has taught/shown me is that these more sophisticated microline stylus profiles demand you pay good and careful attention to set up, otherwise you just wont hear and appreciate what these carts can do. It can be fatiguing and is not for everyone, especially if you swap out carts, which I don't. I find them a pain to nail the sweet-spot window, which is very narrow. I find there isn't really a close or nearly with them. However, when you nail it, I have found them all to be superb ! (Ortofon 2 Black, Quintet Black, Cadenza Black and Cadenza Black - re-tipped with Fritz Gyger S stylus profile. It might be the whole pain to set up thing that Kevin is referring to and if so I totally get that.

At €749 I would expect something better. Do you mean, like a Replicant ? That would have been very interesting and likely provided a more tangible difference in presentation. The Replicant is like the FGS profile which Jimbo has on his re-tipped 2M Black so he'll know what a change like that brings. I can definitely hear the difference in presentation, from the original Shibata Cadenza Black, to it retipped with the Fritz Gyger S, there's just a bit more of everything, in a nutshell.

Yes. You are paying much more forjust a boron canti.
My 2M black cost me €400 when I bought it. It was not for me though.

The FGS does produce more detail than the Shibata. The FGS will produce more information (probably) when it's set-up the Scope I have sitting in the corner of the listening room. I just need the test record to be delivered (which I ordered on the 10th), Grrrrr.......

I am sure it does, but this 2M black does not have a FGS.

What does one pay to have a cartridge re-tipped out of interest?

What does one pay to have a cartridge re-tipped out of interest? Depends on who you send it to and what you want doing. Expect to pay between £250-£1K depending on work done.

Thanks, just trying to gauge what level of cartridge you need before it becomes it worthwhile re-tipping rather than replacing the whole cartridge. Hopefully I don’t need to worry about that for a couple of years though!

There are just better profiles out there now, and I personally think that a €300 price increase due to a boron canti is taking the p*$$.

The Quintet Black, when it first launched at £650 approx, came with a boron cantilever and a Shibata, just like it's costlier sibling, the Cadenza Black (with the shortage of boron, Ortofon decided to drop the boron on the Quintet B and use a Sapphire canti' instead) I always wondered how it is that the Cadenza B retailed/retails at £1850 approx - £1200 more than the Quintet B

I only know the Cadenza Black was far superior to he Cadenza Bronze when I heard a dem Bronze has a different character/signature which is warmer apparently. The Black is very detailed, balanced and smooth - a lovely cart.
