Agnes Obel's 4th album MYOPIA was released at the end of February and I have been listening to it for a few weeks on vinyl. Now she has joined Deutche Gramophone / Blue Note label the quality of her record pressings has got even better. My copy was perfect, very flat and without one click or pop, vinyl perfection which is rare nowadays for new stuff.
So I listened a week before I got the vinyl to the music on Spotify and was not that keen but having listened to the vinyl for 2 weeks I have been very impressed with this latest album by Agnes. It is a bit dark, not much light in the music but it does not become downbeat just mysterious and enigmatic. She is a master at delivering these qualities in her music. The production has also increased notch which was certainly not bad on her previous albums but now we are almost in audiophile league. Very pleasant to listen too aurally.
So too the music itself. Well 60% of it is very good indeed with two exceptional compositions both on side B. These are Can't Be which is a simply an amazing juxtaposition of vocal arrangements using her own voice pitched up and down. Probably my favourite track on the album. Just a beautiful composition. The last track on the album 'Won't You Call Me' is also stunningly beautiful and has been on repeat ever since I heard it.Broken Sleep and Island of Doom are very good as are the instrumental arrangements.
This album has definitely been worth the wait and worth buying.
I am sad she has had to cancel all her concerts because of Covid -19 as Ihad tickets for symphony hall on April 6th. However she has rebooked for 6th September so hopefully i can hear her live performance of the music then.....
