Made the mistake of lending my valve mono blocks to a mate. With the understanding that he would use them sensibly.
I get them back one making a hell of a noise and the other popping. Find out his stupid Bi-Polar girlfriend had been pumping movie's on them. Using them on those awful swinging impedance curve B&W Shoite 804's Told him to cool it with the volume, Guess Mrs. Loopy was hitting the white wine, and the volume, along with her med's as usual.
The bloke is a "tad tightly" wound up in his own perfect ego, so to avoid conflict, as he never does anything he has to apoligise for, I just shut my trap.
Just got them back 2 brand new power valves cooked on one and 1 on the other, also had cooked caps in both.
Lucky my repair man was gentle cost me 120 quid. A fair bit of change in our money. I had spare valves which were still good, fortunately. Took a while, he had to import the caps.
Never again ever. My dad always told me, never lend your car, wife, money, or lawn mower.
I have had plenty stuff on loan and demo, I have always taken extra care, and have never had an issue.

I've loaned loads of gear in and out, absolutely tons. I would be mortified if it didn't go back to the owner in the exact same condition it came to me in.
Your mate has no respect for you or your belongings. I'd make him pay, no question.

I'm the same as you Biggy, I take more care of other folks stuff more than I do of mine.

I don't like to borrow stuff that could get damaged. This harks back to a friend's newly restored MK1 Escort and my encounter with a wall.

A friend borrowed a Marantz amp off of me just to 'tide him over' until he got a new amp after his Audiolab died. It's now been 'tiding him over' for twenty-seven years.

I'll only offer gear to people who take care of their own kit. You F#ck it you fix it.

Your mate has no respect for you or your belongings. I'd make him pay, no question. He is a bit of an odd bod. He is fanatical about his own stuff he pays stupid prices for kit under the impression that the more it costs the better it must be. Never mind it always sounds like Sh#t. Anything anybody else has is junk, he has a problem and he knows it, as he is unwilling to change, he must live with it. He does body building, spends a fortune on his hair, clothes, and man cosmetics, and is always maxing out his card. One day we are in the record shop, he is one end, I am at the other. We walk out he is fuming, "every time I wear my Pringle shirt some body asks me for money." I am cracking up inside, Pringle shirt indeed. You see if it does not have a recognised brand name and is not top of the line he looks down on it and holds it in contempt. It is my own bloody fault for lending them. Not worth a fight, to old to tired, been fighting all my life and it got me into more trouble than my peckker. Time to chill, and enjoy the few years left to me. Old age comes up so fast it is frightening. Even walked away from family because I got sick of the incessant drama.

I really worry about borrowing or loaning anything that needs postage. No matter how careful you are, and even how well it’s packed, there’s the question of how well stuff is put together. Look at those SD3s with the sticky taped crossovers. That’s the second time that’s happened. My Reference 3as also had the crossovers wrecked because they weren’t properly secured. 4 paper in oil jobbies destroyed and about £300 to sort. That was all in manufacturers packing just like the SD3s.
If any loan involves transport it needs full insurance and a clear agreement about liability if a claim fails.

On some of these things they cut corners, my friend sells the Ming Da amps. Very nicely finished and they look good. He has had problems when shipping some of the components are glued to the chassis they come loose and cause all sorts of drama. Only seems to happen when they have had a bit of use must be heat related.
Do not bother with them, I do not like the sound of them at all. I think they have made so many different versions with all sorts of valves they have not realy sorted any of them, to many eggs in one basket. Some are micro-phonic, and they all have the same house sound, a bit slow, a grainy mid range, and the tops roll off quite dramatically. Even the expensive ones have the same problem. My entry level Line Magnetic thumps the lot of them.

I have the urge to build you a passive pre lol. Haven't d got a spare but there is one on ebay without the valves. That one is likely to be noisy.

Thanks for that, the only problem is I really need one now and the one you link to has to come from China.

Thanks very much for the kind offers, one maybe not needed if it's only away for 3-4 days. In answer to Macca's question, there is a new stepped attenuator with smoother dial and less noise between movements, you can see it on HFS.

I'd never borrow anything as I'd be sure to break it. To my horror, long after we'd moved away from that particular house and area, I remembered I'd borrowed a hammer from a neighbour and had forgotten to return it. I thought I'd post it back, then couldn't find it, then forgot about it. He's probably still brooding over that, 30 years on.

Never ever again would i lend anything out. I climb the wall over a fingerprint on a fascia. Borrowed out my old Arcam 'CD72' CD player to a mate which came back with the top looking like an Ice Rink. The machine was not worth a great deal on the used market but it had had an expensive DCS Ring DAC upgrade done on it effectively bringing it up to 'CD82' Spec... I never spoke to the wanker since his exact words were 'F#ck man its only a CD player keep your hair on'

That stupid 'bi-polar' women should pay for the repair. If she refuses, call her a fat ugly landwhale!
