The mofi deck is just a cheap rebranding exercise. It's not junk, but it's not that far off.

Not going to lie. But I quite like the looks of the Rega P8. Bit pricey though!

How many records you own Ant? in my 30 years of messing with record decks it's the cartridge arm wire and phono stage that makes the biggest difference. what arm cart combo you got on ya PT? i would say changing to this SAM deck you'll just get a different sound rather than a better sound..i went from a rega 300 arm to the sme v and tbh the sound just changed about 50 quids worth..ofc many people will say i must be deaf..well my hearing is still very good. only system i would build today would be a lossless system..i have no idea how to do it but my son one year sorted some lossless files and we compared to me gyro. no contest the gyro sounded shite..vinyl is way over hyped imho.i have never been happy with it. ofc ok with a pukka recording. but even an amstrad stack system will sound good with steely dan. .ofc if you own thousands of records then ofc u need a good deck

The arm is a J7 modded Rega 250 and a re-tipped Lyra Helikon.

I've heard a few modern Lyra's now and like them a lot. They all seem to share a family 'sound' and it's lively and neutral but sweet enough so you don't get 'edge' or 'grit' in the high frequencies. Bit more bass 'presence' than say a typical OC9 say, but not sluggish or thuddy. Is that what you find?

I would say you're about right. I had a Karma in an Ittok and moved to the Lyra Clavis which improved everything in my book although it was probably double the price at he time. Move to the Helikon and recently had it re-tipped by ESCO. Although I have read it can be a bit toppy, I've never found that, more accurate/neutral.

In the Karma/Troika days, we used to recommend a Koetsu Black as an upgrade and back then it really was... I've heard needle drops of a re-tipped Troika (ESCo and I think Goldring as well) and they seem to come to life when rebuilt this way.

I joined StereoNet forum to read a thread about the SAM tt. Since then I have been going through a 'Show us your Turntable' thread. Just thought I'd say some amazing tt's on there, those Aussie's love their vinyl.
