That rug really is hideous, and I say that as a bloke with the usual bloke's lack of flair for interior decoration. Only a blind man could allow that rug to remain. I really like the thing. Just bought it a few weeks ago, so it will be with me for a while. It does look better in the flesh, but I can’t see it changeing anyone’s mind. It's shocking mate. Really I thought I was going to have to burn my eyes out after seeing it. Even if I was on a post-modernist, self aware, deliberately kitsch, psychedelically drugged acholic bender I don't think I would ever buy that.

My gripe was the hideous blanked off fireplace. Open it up and if there's a draft, put a special balloon in the vent to seal or partly seal it off... I suppose I'd have tried the speakers either side of the fireplace rather than off to one side by the window - glass vibrates at nasty frequencies and as the speakers are onmi's, the glass contribution may be magnified. may not be like that at all of course...

I’m only here for a few weeks, so the fireplace will have to stay the way it is. Personally I would never have an open fire, log burner or any other such nonsense. They are an utter PITA to clean out and they create loads of crap and dust. I don’t even like the looks of them. I’d sooner place a basket of dried flowers or something there, but for the time I’m here it’s not worth it. I would never fire speakers across a room either, unless I had no choice. Nor would I have a chimney breast in between them. It’s probably the best sounding room I’ve set a hifi up in, so the glass wouldn’t seem to be an issue. I’d take the room with me if I could

Actually, I HAVE Heard Kans sounding great either side of a fireplace, but nothing else has ever worked for me. Nothing between the speakers seems to be a golden rule for me. Same with firing down a room wherever possible.
Planets seem to get better, the further back you are from them, although they do seem remarkably unfussy. I wouldn’t expect that from an omni, but the experience beilies expectations on that one. Such is hifi: Confounded expectations seem to abound,

I'm in total agreement regarding open fires/log burners, too much hassle. My parents moved in 1961 and the first thing they did was install a gas fire. When reading dsjr's post I immediately thought of a plant and after reading your post Westie maybe an artificial one would do the job which could be taken with you.

Been listening to my Revolver/Claymore/DIY Cube system. Man, I love the Revolver decks. They just make such great music. I have always thiought them to be more musical than the Regas of that generation. Controversial, I know, but they just fulfil me more, and always have. Claymore is a keeper too. I just can’t fault it and that wee second system really rocks! I’ve had many primary systems that have failed to make music as good as this little gem of a system.
The Claymore cost me £180, the Revolver £60 with a spare NOS cartridge, and the DIY cubes cost just over £100. A £340 vinyl system that will give masses of pleasure, hifi really is a great hobby.

I'm thinking about getting a Campion in the next couple months. What are their going rates nowadays?

It’s a hard one to predict because there hasn’t been one for sale anywhere in a year or more, The last one I recall seeing anywhere was my second one, which I think I sold for £380 in July 17. You will probably pay more for a later one with phono stage, but I’d reckon. £350-400 would be about average.

OFF TOPIC ALERT Fireplaces - I have been considering getting mine pulled out and an RSJ put in. Will free up a LOT of space in my listening room. Log burner - Got one in my kitchen diner. Yes it makes a bit of a mess but no so much if you keep the flue well swept. Would not to be without it. I get all my wood FOC so a no brainer for me. Oh, and is so valuable when the bloody boiler breaks down or I forget to order oil Heats the whole house eventually in fact coming down the stairs you can really feel it.

My pet hate is the chav floating fire with tv on the wall above. For some reason the chimney wall is often red or terracotta. Vile. Utterly vile.

I also dislike those red walls. I don't know what possesses people. First thing I did when I moved in here was paint everywhere white. The bedroom had blue walls and a green carpet! The previous owners were not blind so I've no idea what was going on there.

Unless you’re setting up a nursery school, they are horrid. Sorry if it’s drifted a bit but for me, the room you relax in is kinda part of the equation.

So many things affect what we perceive that we hear besides the sound waves coming out of the speakers. Unless you are blind or close your eyes when listening everything you see will affect your perception of the sound to some degree. It's why people think things like the Mpingo Discs www.shunmook.com/text1.htm can change the sound. It's also why music seems to sound better when you turn the lights down, or why at open-air festivals bands like to go on stage just as the sun is starting to set.

The sitting room has red walls (they were bright yellow before I repainted them shortly after we moved in, twenty-five years ago), and this room has light green walls, as has the hall/landing. To be fair, the carpets are all neutral tones.

But I was talking about the practice of painting just one wall red. IMO it looks crap. It looks like trying too hard to me.

I do love a bargain, so I snapped up a cheap Mission 775LC turntable. My first proper deck, which really got me started on the hifi road. I can’t really keep the Mission and the Revolvers in a second system, so something will need to go. A mate needs a deck for his son, so one of them will likely make its way to him. It needs a bit of tidying up so at least it will look better before I’m done.

Me too. I was well into Mission back when I started. I remember the deck being much better with an isoplat underneath it, so I bought one with matching Mission logo.

It's naturally dark, and I guess the previous residents thought yellow walls would make it look more cheerful. We decided to embrace the darkness and painted the walls a dark-ish red. It feels quite cosy in the winter. I don't get the whole painting one wall thing either. Some friends of ours live in a small terraced house. Their sitting room can only be about ten feet wide, yet they've got one wall painted in sort of gold colour, with the other three walls painted red. A room that small needs white or off-white.

No changes to report, only many more hours of happy listening, One thing that’s dawning on me is just how much the Campion improves when it’s warmed up. Only the MF A1 and the KSA50 have shown anything like this sort of improvement, Even then, I think the Campion probably rewards you more for warming it up. Of course it could also be the DAC and/or CD player warming up too. Whatever it is, it’s sounding sweeter than I can comprehend and it gets hard to turn it off. Something so right about their gear, it’s sad that only the Sedley is still currently made. I have a feeling that this stuff will appreciate massively in a generation.

I would fancy a second Campion again, but that’s probably the only likely change, as long as it all keeps working. I think if I’d found omnis earlier I’d have been far less likely to chop and change. They lead you to listen to the music rather than the hifi.

What you need to do to get it to warm up quicker is borrow your wife's hairdryer Haider from Sonneteer only believes in thermal, warm up, so I guess that would probably do it. Or I could buy another Krell and sit it on top

Andrew,
Have you played some deep bass music through the Planets? I know they wont break people's noses. But can they handle low bass fairly good?
