Yes beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Not keen on its looks, i find the 1210 nicer. I haven’t seen a Pioneer deck I like. PL71 is one ugly mother too. Vile looking thing. One man's creepy ugly PL-71 is another man's funky old looking thing! S.

The PL71 is probably the most 1970s looking deck you can get that's actually any good. So if you have a 1970s fetish and demand decent sound quality...

At least the plinth is solid inside and not like an open resonant box. The motor is able to take a 4g tracking cartridge like an SPU too. Something many from its time couldn't do without severe speed/servo hunting and it came with a damned good tonearm of its type as well. The top techies of the period used to feed back (howl) very easily although I could probably fix that now... You lot will be pleased to know it was only available for a season or so and soon disappeared.

It does appear decently constructed but if that arm has as much in common with the Rega R200 as it appears to, then it’s another black mark against it AFAIC. RB300 wasn’t a great arm but I’ve replaced a few R200s with RB300s and heard the new one leave the old on for dead. Those old arms are also fugly too.

They are on a par with those old SMEs for me. In fact I think the SMEs look and sound worse tbh

RB300 wasn’t a great arm but I’ve replaced a few R200s with RB300s and heard the new one leave the old on for dead. Those old arms are also fugly too. 'Cough' - it depends on the cartridges and the deck they're fitted to. The RB300 and lesser toleranced 250 were less feedback prone on the Planar decks, but with the cartridges of the time could sound constricted. les W had one 'fix' in a long bolt from headshell down the length of the pipe and tensioned tight into the bearing end. My epiphany with this arm came in the Spacedeck's collet which also allowed VTA adjustments - this arm sang on this deck.
I still have a good working R200 here on the RP3 'Mule' I was basically given and it's not a happy match to this later plinth. It's a good sounding arm away from the Rega plinth but obviously hobbled by lack of VTA adjustment and I maintain that it's a good example of the conventional detachable shell type. The PL71 arm was a better toleranced version of this and I suspect the R200 was a parts bin cheaper and scaled down derivative of it.
To try to answer one of jammy's questions - I listen to music all the time and cannot exist without it!

I think most of the high end decks look over-complicated. Nice and simple for me (not my actual deck but its remarkably similar)

How the Pioneer PL-590 can be viewed as horrible, is beyond me. Wouldn't say it's the best-looking deck ever, but it has more going for it than a 1210. I have a PL-630 which has the same spec as the 590. Not a fan of it's suspended platter. But it was £145 bargain. Stanton's STR8-150 looks better than the 1210. Pity about the arm:

Bought another Claymore for headphone duties. It also has handy Mm and Mc for one of the two decks I bought.......just in case I ever set them up Also bought a TPA3116 class D amp on Geoff’s reccy. Likely to do tv duties but will be tried in the main rig.

My Sonneteer has easily seen off everything so the only map that will likely replace it is an Orton or another Campion to bi amp with again. I’m using the Spica TC-60s because they work bets in my room and really are as “Spica” as you can get in terms of character. Still using Sonneteer CD and DAC too. Two decks, a Xerxes and a Mantra are sat waiting to be set up. Might be a while.

I haven’t heard a bad Creek product. Their older amps are stupidly cheap for the sound on offer.
