Thanks, Cagey. Sounds like a plan. I have never tried Focals but I did like their inverted dome tweeters. PaulD seems to have similar ears to me and he loves Focals so I think I probably would too.

I used to go out with a model before I got married. She was a slim and beautiful Anglo Chinese girl. Inflatable?

Spent most of today trying the Planets, Spicas and Ref 3as with both my Campion and Nait.
You know when you have an idea of how something is going to go......and then the opposite happens? I’ve had a day like that.
Firstly I have found the little, Nait1 to be a far better amp than I’d ever given it credit for. Sure I like the sheer evennness and class of my Sonneteer, but the Nait does things I didn’t think it would. Instrument tone is fab and it throws out a large and believable soundstage. That I woudlnt have expected. Never once was it tiring. None of my speakers are demanding so it’s power was never an issue. In short, I was well impressed with the little ‘un.
Second surprise was my expectation of speaker pecking-order. Discounting my Cubette clones, which finished a distant fourth as expected (only cost me £100 to make and much smaller, but still great speakers fwiw), the other three speakers finished in clear reverse order of expectations.
Now lots of this is probably down to a different room and I may be able to squeeze more from the others in time, but the Planets aced it today. They simply succeed utterly in making me forget I’m listening to a recording. They dissolve away the room, extend seamlessly in the bass and treble and just make the air full of glorious sound.
The Spicas came a clear second. They still do that disappearing trick, but they are definitely rolled off at the extremes in comparison and less finessed than the Planets. Still incredibly engaging though and mighty good. I suspect they would still stop folk in their tracks with what they achieve.
Third were my most expensive speakers, the Ref3a MM De Capos. They don’t seem to work in this room and I think a big part of my findings boil down to my dislike of front firing speakers. To me this form of delivery is intrinsically inferior. Having such an outstanding example of a conventional standmont finish so far off the pace is simply confirmation of this to me.
I will likely keep them as I’d like to try in a massive room, sat even further back to see what they are capable of. I would struggle to get another minty boxed pair, so I think they should stay for now.

FWIW if you have never heard speakers that don’t fire straight at you, I’d urge you to get a listen. I don’t know who else makes new ones other than Duevel, Shahinian and NVA but I’m sure there will be others. Then there is the used market. If there has been one single thing that has lifted my listening pleasure, it’s been this discovery. You don’t need to believe me and you may not agree, but you really should try it. A significant proportion of us never look back afterwards.

I have and I see what the attraction is but it is not for me. They don't mix and master on semi omnis. Heard these a few months back, Shainian Arc, quite pricey but they were pretty good. Crisp on the edges but the whole diffuse soundstage thing is too fluffy for me. shahinianacoustics.com/

If you ever get the chance Westie. Give the Nait 2 a try as well. The latter is supposed to be a little more smoother on top. But retains all of the magic from the 1.

Some of the old Sonab omni speakers were decent enough. Good quality drive units for the time.

My local dealer says the 1 is better but the only way to know is to try The nait 1 is my favourite design-wise though. It’s as cute as an amp can get.

I used a Nait 1 recently for some work I did. Clear enough at lower volumes for what I needed, but zero headroom before compression sets in. The Nait 2 at the time didn't have the charm I thought and the 3 killed the concept stone dead. I bowed out of retail when the 5 was current and that's a harsh, nasty thing if pushed as was its replacement, needing a Flatcap2 to help the preamp work properly... Not sure if the current ones sell much now as 'new separates' seem to be going out of fashion in favour of all-in-one streaming solutions - Naims streamers do seem to sound better too, at least they're not headache inducing and look fab in the flesh.

I hate the Nait 3 with a passion. One of the worst amps I’ve ever heard. The Nait 1 couldn’t have asked for an easier ride today as all my speakers are benign and sensitive.

According to Darren at Class A Audio. All Naim 1,2,3 sound the same to his ears. Only difference is power.

I’ve had four of them too (one was a Nait 3r), so it wasn’t just a bad sample. There’s a lack of bass and a real thickness to the sound. Its a pity because a Nait 3 and cd3 would make an attractive 2nd system. The cd3 is nice.

Staying at my pauper level for a minute, what kind of power supply for around the same price could be used? I was thinking a 19V 4A laptop supply (I think they're usually fairly 'clean') with suitable DC plug grafted on... The audiophool cost-aspect is kicking in 'cos how the eff can you make anything that 'sounds' at all for under twenty quid? I mean, a neat sounding little DAC for under a tenner is just about enough (these little DACs really don't 'look' a pile of sh*t westie, but are usually hidden away I admit).
In slight defence of the Nait 3, if you fitted the pre-power conversion kit (which Naim played right down but fitted as standard to the Nait 5), you could fit a Flatcap or similar and this did lift the sonics a good bit. The 90 power amp worked just about ok in a small bi-amp or active set. A CD3.5/Flatcap and 'converted' Nait 3 was also good, each secondary on the supply feeding the CD output stage and preamp circuits - I think that's how we did it...

As if I need any more bloody amps...
I'm extremely curious though, although when I borrowed an Amptastic Mini-1 T amp, it was utterly underwhelming and thin toned to me with too much 'edge' as the volume went up (I'm not that deaf surely? but the Krell 50s usually had the middle bias lamps on at least, so usually 5W average where many only use a watt or so...). For thirty quid (less than a weeks worth of killing sticks for a smoker or maybe a pleasant night out).....

You gotta hit the 50 mark.
Then I suppose Linn will reward you handsomely.

As you can see, within a few hours, the Nait is off and the kans are enjoying a rest. No offence to Nait and Kan lovers, but the change over to Sonneteer and Ref3a was akin to moving from a conversation with Danny Dyer to an enlightening encounter with the Dalai Lama.

Thanks Shane. As engaging as I find Kans. they are really crude and shouty when compared with the sophistry, articulation and grace of the Ref 3as. Big difference in clarity too. Then here’s the fact that instruments sound real on the De Capos and appear as caricatures on the Kans.
Playing around today has also helped me get the De Capos dialled in to the room too. I had them too far apart and toed in. They needed to be closer together and firing straight down the room. Suddenly it all just snapped into focus.

And it’s 48! x That is an interesting place for a listening seat. Is it like having head phones on (but not) ?
