I'd keep the transformers well away from the main boards. Theres no way to keep signal wires shorter than 25cm per channel and that's a lot of wire for pickup. If you use mini coax you can get away with it. If you want lowest noise it's a two box build though. www.flickr.com/photos/59684834@N08/49265806596/I built a set of Tom's 286 the other week in his tiny case, just a massive ball ache with wiring, KISS.

Hmmm. That would be a shame as I have the build almost mapped out in my head and think it would be very cool. 25cm? That is a pretty effective aerial lol Hahaha, yes those 286 cases are dinky aren't they. Wouldn't fancy trying to get my shovel hands in there. BTW, Kitchen is coming on!

Yeh almost done. You could stack the psu parts, and you could build the mainboards on their long edge, but you cant stack the main boards, too much heat from the shunt, top board gets baked, dc offset all over the place.
Theres many good reasons why I lay them out like I do.

No harm done in having a think.

Ha, well don't worry, the important bits (the guts) will be done properly, as per Simon's BOM, but I'm not TOO concerned with the aesthetics of the boxes. If there would be a negative compromise from building a one box unit, I won't do it. However, I do love the idea of a denafrips style build but I'm not married to it. I will investigate further before I I write it off completely. I don't think a 2 box build is an issue, just wanted to be a little different. It can't have any excuses when it goes up against the other phonostages. I don't want any get out clauses. It'll be proper.

It's not just the bom that makes the sound, the layout and placement also has an effect. I dont build them into two full width cases for shits and giggles, I do it because smaller cases compromised the measured noise performance.

I'm chugging through the BOM for the Paradise. Sadly my supplier of styrene caps for the riaa has shut up shop, I'm sampling with a new supplier but they only have limited stock.
Bom is set for my psu boards and spec, tried and tested as opposed to the new one which I haven't built yet. Choose your poison.
Should be complete tomorrow

I happen to know someone with a very extensive back catalogue of out of production parts. I am sure i can source some rarities from him.

I have loads left for my own builds, just need a decent source of 1% parts.

Well I guess a good advantage of diy is that you can spread the cost over a number of months. Whether you want to is your call obvs . Think I'll still persevere but its a long term project.

You should if you are going to carry on with vinyl.
Remember the AQVox stage from the Penkridge bake off? It sounds like that except better in every respect.

You should if you are going to carry on with vinyl. Remember the AQVox stage from the Penkridge bake off? It sounds like that except better in every respect. That's the thing, Martin. I just don't know whether I want to continue with the Vinyl side. I certain have no interest in buying more vinyl and the Digital has pretty much taken over my day to day listening habits. The Bigbottle has reinvigorated me a little with the vinyl and I presumed that the Paradise would take it a step further but my love of Analogue in general has definitely waned. That £900 could put me 2/3 of the way to a Matrix Pro Sabre and even though I keep getting messages to keep the SP10, I genuinely feel an urge to sell it and move on. I would have to keep a TT of some sort as I don't want to lose it completely. I think what I need is to try and loan something that someone considers Digital Royalty and see whether it would pay the dividend to make the shift.

I'd put the money into your dedicated listening room if I were you. And I'd keep the SP10. Never liquidate your assets unless you have to. Even I keep a turntable on the books! Borrowing a fancy DAC sounds like a good idea but I reckon you'll come back and agree that it doesn't bring anything extra to the party. Money on it

It would be nice to hear one though so maybe we should sort that out. The Paradise would be worth more to sell than the sum of it's parts cost to make, so I am not really concerned about how it sounds in all honesty. I wouldn't lose on it. The bit that is niggling at me is that I won't build it quickly and it'll be the main drain on my finances (hifi finances) for about 9 months and then I may just be in the same position, wondering if I should've made the move to digital. I don't like wasting time and there Is a little thing in my mind that wonders more about what a top class dac could do, than what the paradise could do.
