I recently bought a phase 2 Reference just like this one but with gold knobs
I always liked the looks and I wanted to see how it compared to my Sonneteer Campion. A mate is looking after it for me right now. Anyone heard them or Ben seen them in the flesh? It will be a few weeks before I get to even see it. I have a good sense of anticipation though

Smooth sounding and the ones we had had earthing crackles every time the controls were operated due in part to the extensions from knobs to controls at the back of the case. They went back and some mods were done. Just not enough to make them front rank sadly - I think you need to be larger than life as a maker or distributor to make a presence (or a scene) to get noticed...

You're dead right Dave, nice guys do tend to finish last a lot of the time. I don't even know who he is/was but I seem to remember Northern Irish connections,

He spoke with general English accent I recall. I'm not sure if he was drummed out of many dealers as I know others were (you-know-who and Myst, the latter I can confirm as I witnessed the patronising way they were treated in our London store despite having good well made products).
If you see one at a fair price and not butchered around with, I'm sure it'd make a great used amp buy. Another similar would be the late 90's era Albarry integrated, which used to be around a grand I seem to remember (I'm ignoring the rather wonderful monos that Neil made)...

There's a series 3 power on EBay. It would make a nice pair with a phase 2.

Hi. I recently picked up a phase 2 that appears to be missing four transistors. Because of the lack on information online I have found it difficult to identify what those transistors are and I was wondering if you could be of any help?

Dave is a wealth of knowledge on older amplifiers. Maybe he'll be along shortly to help In the meantime, why not say hello in the "Hello" section of the forum. Oliver.

I remember them first coming out. I cant see the picture right but i remember a blue marble effect finish to the fascia & they used proper transistors on the output [T03]

Hi there,
I am new to the world of enthusiasts websites, however the time has come, after many years, to start to offer some support to owners of Shearne Audio products.
Very regretably, I have not been in touch with John Shearne for many years, but I can say that he is a man of great audio vision - he knew what he wanted from a product, and he utilised good people to make his products - I was one of them.....
First posting:
All Shearne Audio Power amp stages use virtually the same circuit topology, the only variances being slight enhancements to various power supply sections. The output bias current, measured across the 0R33 output resistors, should work out at between 12mA and 15mA - or slightly higher for the Phase 1 and 5 - 20mA. All small signal transistors are BC184C/BC214C, except in Phase1 and 5, where I used 2SA1085/2SC2547. Output transistors are Darlingtons - MJ11015/6 for most models, but MJ4032/5 in 2.5 and 3.5, and MJ11032/3 in Phase 5.
It is sometimes the case that an amplifer fails with a small bang and associated puff of smoke. Upon removing the cover, you will see that this failure has destroyed the small de-coupling capacitors to the edge of each amplifier block. To repair, you will need to replace all of the small signal transistors, together with the output devices, and exploded capacitors. The small polystyrene capacitors also need to be checked, as do the 0R33 6W resistors near the output. This was a design omission, and originated in the very first models, and is as a result of the output devices failing because their Vbe max is exceeded when the amp was last switched off! The liklihood of this happening was dependant on the actual moment of turn-off being in just the wrong part of the AC feed waveform, and so was considered so unlikely, that the issue was never addressed whilst in production. The solution is the simple addition of four IN4002/3 etc across each output transistor - emitter to collector, with cathode to positive rail side for 11016.and anode to negative rail side for 11015 - this can easily be done by connecting across resistor legs of the 2W5 and 6W resistors in the collector and emitter circuits.

Great to have you here.Although I preferred my Sonneteer (I always do lol) I thought the Shearne Phase 3 Reference was a lovey amp. They are early rare these days and I’m guessing owners hardly ever sell them. Hopefully your help can keep more of these great amps on the road.

Agreed, thanks for coming here and posting this info, which any half decent techie would be able to implement if the need arose.

I remember these well... We used to make some of them for Shearne at Alchemist Products! Shearne used the same metalwork supplier as us, which was in the building underneath us at that time in the Muswell Hill premises.

Cheers Shane. I'm going to be posting here a lot more often.... I'd LOVE to spill the beans as to why but unfortunately a banner warning against posting about other forums keeps going across the screen... Lets just say I'm banned from a forum with fish in its name... I had been posting here on Audio Addicts back in Feb and enjoying the site but felt I had to boycott it over the political views of certain members here expressed in an "off-topic" area. We'll see how that goes....
On a general note, which I hope will be non specific/non-detailed enough to avoid falling foul of AUP here, I will say that this thing with most forums not allowing stuff to be said about other forums boils my piss as it allows forum owners to be as bang out of order as they like, then ban you, leaving you with no right of reply or redress, and you can't even tell the hi fi public what happened, how badly treated you were etc, even on another forum... It kinda makes forum owners "above the law"... beyond criticism anyway, and no matter what they've done! Sa la vie eh...

The rule about other forums changed here a while back. I’m not sure if it makes much difference here but the old rule was no discussion of offer forum personas because it always ends in tears.
Below is the latest incarnation which I will quote exactly.
“No ad hominem towards other forum members. If you want to have a go at other forums and/or their members, please do it on their turf, not ours.”
I get what Jez means about having no right of reply when wronged. The problem comes when you try to allow such discussion. It has caused so many forum fallouts, threats of people being sued and also makes it an absolute nightmare to moderate. You can never win, believe me I’ve tried it.
The politics thing is tricky but hopefully manageable. Some folk are offended by others views. I get that. But that can’t be an excuse for playing the man. I’m staunchly anti-Brexit but I just don’t bring it here because it’s not about hifi and I know my views will upset some. I also can’t be arsed arguing about something I can’t change.
If we can all avoid slanging matches and talk mostly bait hifi, there should be very little need for anyone to get upset......and hopefully very little need for us to have to get involved, other than to discuss hifi.

I accept that was not clear but after you kicked off I could not be bothered to explain further. I'm about as far from a fascist as you can get. I'm glad to see you are posting here again.

It's a fine line Westie yeah and I was never under any illusions about the down side of allowing people to say what they like about other forums, and the moderation issues it could cause... It seems very wrong to me though that a forum owner can call you worse than Sh#t or whatever and if you try to tell them what you think of them your post is deleted... they are guaranteed the last word and guaranteed to win every argument... merely by "having the power" of post deletion and threats of banning people. As I was banned over my making a stand over principles it especially rankles though.
I'm here to discuss hi fi, give some hopefully useful technical advice etc and of course try and pick up some work repairing gear for people, selling phono stages etc... a good chin wag about politics is something I enjoy though... and on that front I'm also staunchly remain... and staunchly left wing.. The only thing I want more than Article 50 to be revoked is to see Corbyn as our PM! I have a feeling that this site will be rather more gammon than the one I'm more used to!
