I totally agree, digital speakers, room correction, fir filters and such like are the next big thing. Though I think there's still miles to come from drive unit design itself though progress is likely to be related to adoption of better materials in cones and motor assemblies and as such not likely to be at any great pace as itll spin off from developments and uptake in other markets.

Gave the dac board some love today, fitted 1.5F 5v avx supercaps to each rail. Sq initially took a large hit, but after a couple of hours and several power cycles it's really singing.

Went round to my mate Paul's tonight, he's done his clocks, very decent upgrade, more focus, more precision, less obviously digital all round.

 So a few more things have been thrown at it. New clocks, Crystek CCHD 957, not cheap, but worth it. Timing is rock solid. www.crystek.com/crystal/spec-sheets/clock/CCHD-957.pdf I might add local regs for the XO rails at some point. Removed the Op-amp IV board and have installed a transformer IV stage, a pair of Lundahl LL1674. I'm not 100% on this, if its better or just different. It's certainly smoother. Like adding a smidge of what a MFA pre-amp gives but without the lack of drive that often comes with it. I've split out the voltage rails for AVCC, VCCA and DVCC on the DAC. These were all fed by one shared 3.3v Lifepo from A123 and then given their own 1.5F supercaps. These are now running regs for AVCC and another on VCCA and DVCC is on the battery rail by it's own. Splitting AVCC made a big difference, probably the biggest change of anything I've done to it. Adding the second reg really didn't seem to bring anything to the party. As yet i don't know if its reg vs battery that makes the difference or 3 split rails that makes the difference. Fortunately Mr dog has the same stack of bits, so he can rig his on 3 battery rails. That would be the neatest soltuion as the battery rails for the +/- for the op-amp IV could be re-used for the extra two rails (because the transformer IV needs no power). It all depends on if I like the op-amp IV more when I swap back later this week.  Not much to look at. But it's achingly close in quality to how the Weiss 202 used to sound. Frankly I'm past looking for better sound with it I'm just dicking about for the sake of it. |

It's close to casing up time. I'll split the stack into two heights so it fits a 2u with space. Back and front panels will need to be cnc by schaffner. I'll ask mark to do samples in acrylic. Front panel with two displays and two buttons. Back panel with two psu inputs, pi sockets and xlr outs.
Itll be bang tidy, eventually...

I don't doubt it but it's not something for the likes of me to play with. I imagine you'll do a good job of casework and it wouldn't look out of place in any setting.
Looking forward to the end result.
How much has it cost you to put together, inc est for the casework, if I may be so bold?.

It's easily in the 2-3k sound wise range as it stands. Maybe more.
It's good, very good, almost weiss 202 good.
