I don’t understand it fully either, I do believe it’s an important part of getting a CD player to,sound good though. Stu must Ben one of the very few who has tried just about every mod possible, but I’m sure he will find one or two more before he’s done. I wonder what he’d target on an SLP1200 if he got one.

SLP1200 looks like an interesting player for sure. Already has a couple of EI transformers but it wouldn't hurt to throw a few more at it.

Mine is the Amethyst... metrumacoustics.com/product/amethyst-by-metrum-acoustics/?cn-reloaded=1The marketing blurb is a bit ott but the dac itself does offer a different presentation to most that I've heard. More texture and quite easy going without losing clarity.

Don't do cheap, do you! 😆 I do when I'm skint! There's a £5 chinese dac with a £40 chinese LPSU that has seen off anything else I've heard up to £300, if that helps. On ebay.

It's the one that Richard used to demo his systems at a couple of shows last year. I had it at one of my bake-offs and it was only beaten by a £1k Chord. The £5 dac is ok on it's own but really is lifted by the £40 psu. Photos and links on HFS. I've also currently got an SMSL dac and lpsu sitting spare if you want to borrow them.

I'd definitely have a loan. Thanks! I have a shed load of raspberry pi stuff on the way to try too. I'll drop you a pm with address details and we'll sort out the postage!

Yet I'm going to build up a pi based dac, dual 9038s, isolator dop dsd board, lundalh based balanced output and an alternative opamp stage all powered by lifepo battery supply. Nor sure when thatll roll, waiting on boards.

It's been a bit of a revelation.

If it's owt like my usual builds it'll all lie around on the floor for 12 months with its kiddie snarling tendrils just waiting to trip up anyone who ventures into the room of doom.

I've got one of those £5 DACs knocking around. We once had the chance to try it with a NAGRA CD player.... The Nagra sounded better as a transport into the £5 DAC than using it's own internal DAC. I give up

Never took much notice of what chips are used, if any piece of kit draws attention to it's self then it has to go, synergy is my goal. Took an old QED digit that had been lying around for ages (with separate power supply) and hooked it up a pals newish Arcam CDP he was griping about, and both of us agreed it sounded much better with the QED, so I gave it to him and he is still as happy as chips with it. On some players high end and budget it was better when I used it, on some no difference, but never worse go figure. Am I deaf? Music comes first if I can sit and listen for 4-5 hours at a time and still want more then mission accomplished.
Presently using a Musical Fidelity XDAC V8 very happy with it. Very musical took the nasty edge of my Denon DCD 1460 and JVC XL-Z431 but made no difference to my Jolida JD 100. Valve output exactly the same as the solid state, got some fancy expensive NOS 6922's lying around perhaps I should play around.

Thats it in a nutshell, youve got a fine system if it plays whatever you throw at it with aplomb, and has the ability to keep you playing your music collection into the wee small hours. PS......A wee tipple, and the warm glow of valves (Toobs if yer a Yank) enhance the experience greatly.

Bobby Darin matey Sinatra is far to slow on smoke.

I used to enjoy a blow to JJ Cale's (Troubadour) album. If JJ was any more laid back he would fall off his chair..
