Nah, it’s a generally accepted term for that Philips gear on forums.

It is pretty good but UK Hifi reviewers, being a bunch of no-nothing chancers who thought Naim and Exposure were the pinnacle of sound quality, didn't rate it. Hence the nickname it acquired

Looks aren't for me, should be in a studio rather than a home.

What if your home looks like a studio though? Would fit in really well at my place. I might start tracking it all down, except for the tape deck. Use it as the TV system.

It is pretty good but UK Hifi reviewers, being a bunch of no-nothing chancers who thought Naim and Exposure were the pinnacle of sound quality, didn't rate it. Hence the nickname it acquired I don't think that's strictly accurate. we had the Black Tulip stuff at KJ forty or so years ago and despite the sonics being basically ok, the 'feel' of the gear was a bit tacky, after care wasn't too hot compared to other audio manufacturers and basically, no interest even after demming it!
Philips always seemed to have good basic designs, but the execution of these wasn't always very slick, video mechs using lots of glass? loaded plastic, noisy clunky operation and often other frail parts (GA212 turntable with Sh#t tonearm bearings for the period, steel platter and box-plinth held together with self adhesive tape - apart from that, the sonic performance could be outstanding when it worked and if the platter didn't mess up the cartridge playing weight).

Well I agree most Philips kit is tat with average sound quality.
But even a busted clock is right twice a day so they did deliver some gems, I mean it's the law of averages with a company that size.
I like the look of it, I like the red LEDs, the knobs, the VU meters and the rack-mount aesthetic. More than good enough for the TV system which is where I get to indulge myself nowadays. Main system only has the best stuff in it regardless of looks.

Just found this thread... Have just unpacked a lot of stuff in storage, and felt utter joy at being reunited with my Fisher 1980s stack system. It was in full working order when I boxed it up. Now, it needs a bit of TLC. Tape deck: neither are working. Does that mean it's the belt? Radio: working perfectly. Turnable: arm lifts and drops on to record as it should, but then stylus doesn't connect with the record. New stylus needed? Any advice greatly appreciated.

classic stuff.
Tape deck probably the belt has perished, turntable I don't know, is it the linear tracking one?
